NASCAR drivers often want a little more time off. Six-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson apparently is one of them.

The race this weekend at Auto Club Speedway is 400 miles. It used to be 500 miles.

Prior to practice Friday, Johnson was asked his opinion about shorter races and, in a grander scheme of things, a shorter Cup schedule. The circuit currently runs 36 points races each year, plus two special events.

“It’s a great idea,” Johnson said. “Maybe 25 races a year would be really good. Thirty maybe?”

I can definitely understand him wanting a shorter schedule. I have done many 23 and 24 race schedules and i can only imagine what a 36 or 38 race schedule would be like. That is why i have chosen to do a 12 to 16 race part time schedule for the past 10 years. Being on the road is fun when your young but as you get older you like to stay home a little more often.
