John's Response to His National Anthem Performance
Dear friends,

I have received many emails from you regarding my performance last weekend at the race in Atlanta. Many of you were confused and offended by my rendition of our National Anthem. Enough of you wrote in that I now feel it is my obligation to answer your concerns.

Everyone has good days and bad days and it's no different for singers. Unfortunately my bad day was televised. Based on lack of information, many of you assumed that my less than perfect performance was alcohol related, and I understand how it may have appeared that way. Let me explain why.

A couple of years ago I noticed hearing loss in my right ear and I would occasionally lose my balance. As time passed both symptoms worsened until I finally, at the beginning of this year, went to a doctor in Nashville and most recently LA.

I have been diagnosed with a condition known as Acoustic Neuroma which can seriously affect my hearing and balance. The unsteadiness in me that you saw was my vertigo and lack of balance.

The side-effect of loss of balance that makes me feel like I am falling does not bother me all the time but is more noticeable when I am tired and fatigued. Prior to the race I had shows and had met and talked to a lot of people. I was tired both physically and vocally. Better judgment might have been to notify the promoters instead of trying to perform the anthem. However, due to my contractual obligation I decided to go ahead with the performance. In hindsight, I shouldn't have.

Please accept my sincerest apologies for offending anyone, it was certainly not my intention. I will continue to see the doctors as we try to determine the best course of action to remedy the Acoustic Neuroma condition. The good news is my doctors feel that there is a very good chance that the situation can be corrected and it should not affect any of the tour dates we have scheduled.

Thank you for listening to my music and voicing your opinions and of course your years of support.

I like John alot. I was wondering what was going on. I was almost positive he had been sippin on the bottle.

I still don't understand if this condition is so bad why he decided to go ahead and sing. I'm sure someone, some group would have stepped in.

I also notice the undisguised plug there at the end --- basically saying keep buying those concert tickets.

Exactly! Bet there's a waiting list a mile long.

This sounds like a condition where physcial exertion causes the effect. You can easily get into a situation where you don't realize you've over exerted yourself or that it is effecting your behavior.

The guy has apologized. Time to move on.

it wasn't that bad, I have it on tape, went back and watched it, the best part though, was seeing the look on both Kahne and B. Labonte's faces when he got the words wrong...also, I really don't believe this "condition" BS, dude was three sheets to the wind.

Thank you for your medical diagnosis Dr. esorlxaw.

Hey Lappy, haven't seen you in a bit, where you been or have I just been in a daze?

the man appologized for something he didnt have to appologize for, im sure he aint lieing about his condition, i dont see how people can still make fun of him for it

Well, he is a 'professional', and as a professional, and having 'sought medical help' for his condition, one would think he would have had a good National Anthem in the 'can' for just this type of circumstance, and do a "lip-sync".

I did a little researh, talked to my daughter the PAC, and do believe he has this condition. HOWEVER, knowing that, why was he still performing? I know, it's a benign tumor that affects his motor abilities and hearing......GET THE TREATMENT JOHN!

I agree, Kat. I did some research myself and nowhere does it mention that this would contribute to FORGETTING THE WORDS TO THE NATIONAL FREAKIN' ANTHEM. He may have the condition, but I don't believe it was the only thing responsible for the performance. Once again, some will have problems with what I say, but I want to clarify that I have no problems whatsoever if he was, indeed intoxicated, I just wish he could admit it.

Hey guys if you're going to Bristol there's a free concert by JMM.
