A couple of things Johnny said. You can of course read the entire transcript at NOL.
Some mention was made here regarding qualifying setups in WC racing and perhaps the effect if they were not allowed. Johhny was answering a question about qualifying and made the following statement. I did not know that BGN required the same setup for racing and qualifying, big surprise to me.
“Our qualifying setups are not that close to the race setups most of the time. In Busch you have to qualify the car the way you race it, and that has helped the series. Winston Cup doesn't do that. You have a qualifying setup and a race setup, and very seldom are they the same, but at some tracks they are.”
Always there are discussions about drivers moving up to Cup too soon, or how will this BGN driver fare in WC as opposed to that driver. Is it a big change? JB thinks so.
Johnny, how intense is the learning curve from Busch to Cup, seriously?
“[Johnny_Benson] It is pretty huge. Through my racing career, from late models, to ASA, to BGN, and then to Winston Cup, I look at is as steps. From the late model division to ASA, that was like 2 steps. Then from ASA to BGN, that was like going 2-4 steps, but from BGN to Cup, was like getting to the top of the steps in one giant jump. It is extremely tough. “
