Sauter to run his own car in Cup with RCR engines: The Johnny Sauter saga is taking another strange turn. While car owner Richard Childress has put Dave Blaney in the #30 cars that Sauter has been driving on the Cup tour, Childress is keeping Sauter under contract and will provide engines and backing for Sauter to run his own cars later this summer. So Sauter will get a novel chance to show he can make it in this sport in the coming weeks by designing his own Cup cars with buddy Joe Shear. Cary Agajanian, Sauter's agent and one of this sport's noted attorneys says that it's a good break for Sauter: "Johnny will run a few races, under no pressure, with a car the way he wants it built. When Johnny won ... last year at Richmond in the Busch series, it was in a car built by Joe and Johnny themselves. And these cars will be the same thing - these two guys will be able to build their own cars for Cup, it's a most amazing thing." Agajanian said that it will be a joint venture by Childress and the Sauter-Agajanian team. "And then we'll see what happens for next year," Agajanian says.(Winston Salem Journal)(6-21-2004)

Johnny does come from a family that has eat, breathed, and SH_T racing, so maybe he can make this work. And maybe with it being his car, he will use more calculated agressive driving. Try to get just a top 5 or 10 instead of all out beat and bash to the win.

Good Luck to Johnny.
Last weekend Johnny's nephew, Travis, finished second at the local 1/2 mile track.

I had no idea Johnny Sauter had built some of his own Busch cars. This little Cup endeavor might turn out to be quite beneficial for him and his career. Will have to see how this develops.

Bravo Childress. I'd definately keep Little Johnny under contract. I imagine other teams are literally beating the doors down to sign him away from you.

Any driver who can work on a car from the ground up and develop that car into a competitive piece of machinery has a huge advantage in todays' racing world. Look at what Newman has done and contiues to do. How many times have you seen Newman working on the #12 himself after a crash, beating and banging on it to get it back into the race!? Personality wise, Sauter reminds me of another Childress driver with an agressive style, hopefully Johnny will learn from this experieince and make a name for himself.

Problem with Sauter is that they rushed him into a Cup car. He needs to spend at least 2 to 3 years in a Busch car IMO. Because after a driver learns ins and outs of Busch Series it makes it so much simpler on them in the Cup series.
