Pit road telemetry. Does it need to be televised? Jimmie Johnson gets busted for speeding on pit road, commence with the whining. According to the media posts Jimmie Johnson was traveling 35.53 mph when he was caught for speeding. The pit-road speed limit was 30 mph with a 5 mph buffer.

Johnson on his speeding penalty: "I wasn't speeding. They didn't like how it looked. There is just no way. People will say whatever."

Does it need to be televised? Will it make a difference if they simply post the number on the screen? Is that going to make it less suspect in the minds of NASCAR fans? I doubt it.

I don't think televising it will help. Then some of the fans will just say, they can make it show what they want it to. They show it to the crew chiefs and that's good enough for me. Every driver that gets caught swears he wasn't. Jimmie is good at speeding between the lines but getting slowed enough before crossing the line, this time he didn't.

Well said. Exactly the case.

I agree with you completely. I would venture to guess that most drivers do the same thing as Jimmie on pit road, speed between the timming lines. Jimmie just tends to do it better than most. He got busted yesterday though.

Man, I guess this blows the conspiracy out of the water that "Jimmie can do anything and does not get penalyzed"...but then again...they will find a way to argue it lol

I doubt NASCAR would allow pit road speeds to be televised, even though I think they should.

psst, it's a setup. ;) now that he's been penalized he's free and clear the rest of the season. <g>

It would be better if na$car allowed cars to follow the pace car in small groups 4-6 at a time before or after final practice. Setting pit road speed by the tach when you're not in the first few rows is tough due to the acordian effect.

He was pissed at his crew, and got a little aggressive on the throttle. I would like to see it posted on TV, but it won't happen

Geez Jimmie relax you got busted once Robby Gordon gets it like 3 times a race:D.

^ If Robby would go as fast on the track as he does on pit road he might do better than 30th in the race. Anywho, as much as JJ hasn't gotten away with a speeding penalty is the least he deserves.

Like I said in another thread, how many times have see seen other cars go down pit road behind Jimmie and at what appeara to be the same speed, only to be hit with a penalty while JJ cruises on.

I guess the new and improved KB is the favored child of NASCAR. :D

I hate it when they can zip along as fast as they want before reaching the next timing line. Remove the lines, no speeding at any time.

LOL...the torch has been passed! lol

Really guys, I don't consider JJ getting up set about this "whinning" I mean, I would venture to guess that most drivers who get caught speeding is not thrilled about it and would say "no I wasn't".

I thought DW's head was gonna exploded, when he couldn't figure out who he wanted to finish 2nd. Favorite #1 or Favorite #2, "Junior got him, my god he finished 2nd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" "Go Jr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's back carve his name on the cup right now""""""""""""""" :micro:

How would they do that? Have a cop out there with a radar gun? The method they are using is probably the most accurate.

Besides, no matter what method they used, the teams would figure out a way to get around it.

I THINK KB was the first one doing this as he was frequently saving a boatload of time on green flag stops. I have a feeling that the data transferred when his former spotter moved over to Gordan's team.

For starters, we as pedestrians don't know where the cop is, until it's too late, and we get busted for speeding.
The drivers should not know where the speed loops on pit road are located.
Nascar should hang 30 of them on pit road, with only 15 working. Let the drivers try to figure out which 15 they can speed between.
That'd fix the problem.

the lines haven't always been there. have an entrance and exit line on pit road and that's it. the transponders will still send the data, the drivers just wouldn't know at what particular spots on pit road it was being sent.

I like that idea.

I like that idea.

So do I.

And telemetry. If NASCAR knows certain drivers are speeding between the loops, NASCAR should check telemetry and penalize them. They've always known Johnson does it and Kyle Busch does it.

If it's a safety rule, it needs to be enforced... simple as that.

Speeding on pit road is sooo stupid. There is such an easy solution its pathetic. My 19 year old SHO has a tachometer, and a speedometer why can't a NA$CAR? What the NA$CAR driver can only read one gauge at a time? Also think of the money NA$CAR could save on all those timing loops.

I believe that the speed limit on pit road is for safety reasons. Nascar allowing drivers to speed between the loops is contrary to that.

In 1990 Rudd locked up and spun on pit road killing the right rear tire changer of Bill Elliot.

IIRC NA$CAR then started the odd/even pitting, they used orange and blue dots on the windshield. That, like other brillant na$car ideas, bombed. I believe that's when speed limits were introduced.

Penalty

NASCAR should show the speeds when there a penalty if only to show that they don't are honest.

Thats not a bad idea, or have 15 of them randomly rotate so they can never figure out which ones are on.

You would have 25 speeding penalties every race lol

Instead of a drive thru make it a 5 lap penalty. That'll get their attention. And not able to use a lucky dog.:beerbang:

They shouldn't have a lucky dog in the first place. You shouldn't give anything away in a competitive sport.

Jimmie Johnson said Mike Helton has invited him to scoring tower during a non-Cup race so he can see pit-road monitors & how it works.

EXACTLY
Like ive said several times before...Until NASCRAP hands over the pit road telemetry to the networks, their credibility is NO better than the WWF....It's gone on for decades....Penalize the driver/owner/team that pi$$ed them off....Give the FREE pass to the "goldenchild" of that particular moment....Back in the old days, how many FREE passes did "Capt Jack" give "Sunday Money" over the years.....Only a HARDCORE NASCRAP fan would know who those 2 people were.......:D

Flashback to October 2004..... different year, same driver, same complaint.....

"We don't agree," team owner Rick Hendrick said. "We didn't pick up any spots [exiting the pits]. We were following the guys in front of us. If we were speeding, they were speeding."

"I don't think it was fair," Johnson said. "I don't think we were speeding, and I don't think it was right. We'll take it from here. At least we salvaged a good day out of it."

"The real deal is we got telemetry now," Hendrick said. "Maybe if CBS and Fox say they need them in cars, they'll get them. ... If it came to putting more stands here or selling some more tickets, they'd be doing it.

"Spending a little money to take the guesswork out of it, I guess the tracks don't want to do it."

"The measurements definitely are not consistent on the race track," Johnson said. "We have enough technology where we could put something in place. There would be a lot of people nailed for speeding, but at least you would have something valid, proving what you did wrong. Now it's just speculation."

It's Deja Vu All over Again

Regardless of what NASCAR does about speeding on pit road drivers and fans alike will continue to complain. Televise it, fans will still say it's fixed. It's a no win situation.
