Johnson hosting charity golf tournament

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reigning Nextel Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson and his wife, Chandra, plan to host their first charity golf tournament on Aug. 29 in San Diego.
More than 200 golfers are scheduled to attend the Jimmie Johnson Foundation Inaugural Golf Tournament, including NASCAR drivers Bobby Labonte, Brian Vickers, Juan Pablo Montoya and Kyle Petty.

"When Chandra and I were talking about starting the foundation, we knew one of the things we wanted to do was to give back to the areas where we grew up," Johnson said in a news release. "San Diego is the place where I grew up, and I feel a lot of my success comes from the values I learned and support I've had from the people there. Sure, it is going to be rewarding, but it's also going to be a lot of fun."

Money raised at the tournament will benefit a San Diego Habitat for Humanity house in El Cajon, Johnson's hometown.
In addition to the tournament, Johnson is holding a private dinner and auction, featuring one of his race-worn helmets, a Jeff Gordon fire suit, a VIP trip for two to the 2008 ESPY Awards and the chance to meet skateboarding legend Tony Hawk.
In honor of his charity work that week, Johnson's No. 48 Chevrolet will feature a special Jimmie Johnson Foundation/Habitat for Humanity paint scheme for the Sept. 2 Sharp Aquos 500 Nextel Cup Series race at California Speedway.
