Dale Jr. still leads drivers in sales: Danica Patrick has won just 1 of 81 IRL races (1.23%). But Dale Earnhardt Jr. has Patrick easily beat on that winning percentage. "Little E" has won 1 of the last 129 Sprint Cup races (0.77%) and he's 0 for the last 51. Yet, Earnhardt seems to be humming along in the business world. This week, Nationwide announced this week it was renewing its deal with him and we just got the NASCAR.com SuperStore sales rankings and guess what? Earnhardt is in his familiar No. 1 spot. Here's the list of the Top 10 best-selling drivers on the Web site:
Top 10 Best-Selling Drivers
1. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2. Tony Stewart
3. Jeff Gordon
4. Jimmie Johnson
5. NASCAR-branded items
6. Kyle Busch
7. Carl Edwards
8. Kasey Kahne
9. Mark Martin
10. Dale Earnhardt Sr.(CNBC.com)(10-14-2009)

Dale Sr. has been dead for 8 1/2 years and still outsales 35+ other drivers. That's sad on so many levels.

But hardly surprising considering that in 30 minutes he'll be in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

As a comparison:

Kenseth won 18 0f 356 races.

Jr won 18 of 357 races.

I don't care about popularity, just because you're popular doesn't mean you're good. Face it, Jr. is riding on his daddy's coat tail, and he'll always be riding on his coat tail.

Yep, that is why the other drivers let him win the Busch Championship. They didn't want to upset Dale, Sr.

Interesting. I didn't realize those two were so close. But Kenseth has a Cup championship and Junior doesn't. Kenseth better pick it up or Roush will run him off too. :D:rolleyes:

He has been driving in the Sprint Cup series for 10 season now, and he only has won 18 races. His best season was in 2004 when he won 6 races. Even after switching to the Hendricks team, and getting a new crew chief he has trouble breaking into the middle of the pack. Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson are all in the chase for the cup and they are Hendrick's driver. So it's pretty obvious that the problem with the 88 team is the person sitting behind the steering wheel.

He may have been a good Busch driver, but he's a mediocre Sprint driver.

That's funny, because you can change 2004 to 2003, and you would be talking about Kenseth.

Actually, I think Junior's best season was last year. Not only did the make the chase, but was the point leader for much of the season.

Yea, but Kenseth isn't the most popular driver, he isn't overrated.

No doubt, this was probably Jr's worst year in Cup. There are a lot of Jr. haters that love to jump all over him because he isn't as good as his Dad. Well, there aren't many that good. Jr. had some pretty good years, to date, in Cup. Next year should be the "telling" if he is above average or an average like Kenseth, Newman, Biffle, Kahne, etc. :)

Why would next year be telling? Also, I was never a Sr. fan, I just don't think he deserves the popularity, and I honestly think he's only getting it because of his last name, nothing else. Jr. fan thinks that he's the second coming of the Nascar messiah, and I'm now hearing reports that a few of them are now disappointed.

Over the past 10 years he's #5 on the win list in NASCAR. There's only four drivers to have won more races over that time period. Not bad for mediocre.

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH :bleh:

I'm a Junior fan, but I certainly don't cheer for him because of his name, or his father, or because of his driving. And while he's not bad-looking, that's not why I follow his career.

I root for him simply because ...........

He's had a hard road to make his own name. A lot of people expect him to be his father -- he's not. I think Kyle Petty knows exactly how hard it is on him. However, Kyle had his own name, he wasn't a Petty, Jr.

And since 2001, there isn't enough money to make me shoulder the burden of the name Earnhardt.

Well said TRL.Some people pick their drivers by the number of wins they have.I pick them by the kind of person they are on and especially off the track. If they win then it's a added bonus.

Earnhardt suffering? Yea, he's suffering alright. He has the name of a 7 time champion that has opened doors for him. I doubt Hendrick would've taken him onto his team if he didn't have his name. The only way he's suffering if he doesn't live up to the hype, which honestly is his doing. Maybe Earnhardt should go back to the Nationwide Series.

I pick drivers base on their performance on the track. Which is why I root for Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and Mark Martin. They have real talent and have consistently performed well.

Question --

If one of your "favs" stops winning and has a miserable season, do you stop cheering for them?

But you also don't apparently have a full understanding of what makes race fans race fans. They have favorite drivers for all kinds of different reasons, and picking just winners doesn't really say much about you, except for maybe being a bandwagon fan. What happens when Gordon or Johnson go a couple years without a victory? ya gonna drop 'em?

Some probably do. Not me though. I am still a Bobby Labonte fan and always will be. I am also a Jeff Gordon fan and have stuck with him through thick and thin, same as kelloggs :), and I will be a Gordon fan long after he is finished. I also like Jr and hope he gets back on track and into the Chase next year.

Sorry TRL, I know your post wasn't pointed at me, but thought I would spout off anyhow.

Me, I'm a fan of racing. My favorites are many but I do have a few drivers that I like better than others. I was rooting for little Jeffy when he was 16 and beating those veterans in the midgets. Bill Elliott will always be #1 to me, but I've moved on as well. Tony and Kasey are tops with me now days, but I still root for the others when they win. I was never an Earnhardt fan but have always missed ol Ironhead because he added so much to the racing. I got to liking Jr because he was much different than his father and much more humble. Few drivers do I wish not to win and Mark and Jimmie are two of the most these days. Why Mark? I don't know, I used to really like him when he was younger, but as he aged, something about him just rubbed me the wrong way. I always said that he was the best driver never to win the championship, but I began to think that would be over earlier this year. However, with Jimmie doing what he usually does, Mark just might get another Brides Maid tag this year.

Its funny how we develope out favorites. Maybe its because when we begin to pay attention to the sport, they were winning. Maybe its because we have met them, or know someone that works for them. Maybe we are a part of his sponsor, or his owner. There are many different reasons we just a driver, but for sure, even if we don't admit it, we have favorites. :beerbang:

I would still be fans of Gordon, Johnson and Martin even if they do have bad season, because they have proven that they have talent behind the wheel, and that they had to prove themselves on the track. They didn't have daddy paving the way.

Tony will be my favorite driver till he retires no matter if he wins another race or not. I'm not a bandwagon person......

I'm just proud Tony is the 2nd most popular lol

Davey Allison will always be my favorite driver. So will Terry Labonte, Mark Martin, and Matt Kenseth. I always pull for the #28 car even if I don't care for who's driving it. I could care less if it's Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, or Toyota. I can't stand Rick Hendrick, but that does not stop me from pulling for Terry or Mark.
I'm a fan of the driver.

:)Bobby Labonte is my guy.He hasn't won in years, but I still root for him.Faithful, diehard fans are a rare breed nowadays, but they can still be found.

It's all well and good to say that, but Daddy wasn't driving the car when Jr won 2 championships in Busch, and he wasn't in the car for Jr's 18 wins.

Each driver has people that pave the way for them. Some are noticed, some are not.

If I remember correctly he's been doing better since then(maybe not by the numbers) but always seems to get caught up in someone else's crap or wrecked out by someone(ex. David Ruitemen) so yeah Jr's 2nd half was better and I think if they keep his CC on board he'll do better next season. Maybe even make the chase.

I feel Jr fan pull out a win this year.
