JR's racing suffered after April wreck

Sorry everyone I dont know how to post a link. The article I'm referring to is in ThatsRacin.com entitled, "Jr says head injury stalled his promising season."

In essence Jr said that he felt like he couldn't disclose the severity of his concussion for fear of ruining his career. Getting out of the Bud 8 car wasn't an option for him and he felt obligated to maintain the image his father had, one who never complained and drove on with any type of injury. Also he's seen first hand the reaction Steve Park received following his head injury and said Steve will never be the same. Jr holds his head injury as blame for his disappointing season. He also talks about his contract and the obligations. He wants a little more control.

Sounds like Jr is at a point in his life where maturity is creeping in. But it's a shame when a driver has to worry more about his career than his life.

Thats what everybody says when they are doing bad. :p
No really, I hope the best for him. That was a really hard hit.

wow...hope everything gets turned around.....i think he's getting serious enough to battle for a championship one day

"But I think when I'm 40, I'll want Carson, my little niece, to come out and hang out with me because I'm cooler than her mama. That's important to me that I stay cool. I hope I can hang onto that."<<<-----Junior

To me, that's hero talk.:D

As for the concussion stuff, no mockery from me. Have watched many drivers over the years get off a bit after a bad crash. It's serious stuff and needs to be treated as such.

By speaking up now, Earnhardt is offering an excuse for his disappointing season.

Expected to contend for the championship, he instead sits in 14th place in the points with just one victory on the year. It would have been easy in May and June, when his Dale Earnhardt Inc. team was struggling, to offer his aching head as an excuse.

Bingo.

ahhh yes...i was waiting on Paul to jump in on this one

you wouldnt have said that if it was any other driver

this is his 2nd concusion......they get worse each time

did you notice how much Jarret's performance had dropped off as well?

Sorry, but I didn't say that...the author of the article did.

And I would say it for any other driver. I like Park a ton and have said it about him many, many times.

I like Park too. By all indications he is a fine young man. But that doesn't change my thought that imo he ought to get out racecar driving while he still can.

I knew Junior had a concussion the day after the race! He told Mikey, right on Inside Winston Cup --- Mikey called him during the show.

Of course, he only said "mild", but I knew it had to be worse because of the tremendous hit.

Oh yeah, TRL!...I had forgotten about that. I saw that too. But since it was never spoken of again, I just forgot about it.

Do you buy that it was as bad as he says? (I know some people here probably don't.) I'm sure it's possible, but it does seem an awfully convenient excuse.

If it's true -- and I hate to say this -- but I'm glad. It's a better reason than laziness or apathy.

Oh, I remember it very well. In fact, I'm sure it's true, but that doesn't also mean Junior isn't trying to gain a little public sympathy. Can't say that I blame him.

i like jr. a lot but sometimes that his hang overs effect him and my question is if he wants to look strong and not have people know how bad it was to protect his career than why is saying something now?

I knew when he got out of the car something wasn't right. He was dazed. Concussions are not to be taken lightly.

When he got out of the car it looked like he was hurting a little below the waste and above the knee caps.

The only thing I have to say is that Junior should have gotten out of the car if his performance was affected that much by the accident. Career or not, there are 42 other drivers on the track who are put in danger if a driver isn't 100%. There is nothing heroic about hiding an ailment that could result in someone else getting hurt.

want to know about concusions ask troy aikman

but seriously he shouldnt have been drive the same goes for park and jarret, its a danger to themselfs and everyone else.

i'll admit it to Paul...anytime anyone has that serious of an injury they need to get out of the car.

my question is...how often are these drivers getting head injuries like this and not telling anyone

i mean 2 came out in 2 days...jarrett and earnhardt..who else?

I don't agree with what either driver did, but what dictates if they can drive or not? The way they feel or do they have to have clearance from a doctor? What about Terry Labonte had a broken wrist and he drove with a cast? (He won the NCWCC that year.) When Mark Martin couldn't even get in or out of his race car on his own? Bill Elliott's broken leg?

I know that each injury is different and affects the driver in a different way. But who is to say that the driver is clear to drive?

you know what this all boils down to?

the points system

the points system is basically begging drivers to drive injured

I hate that the system itself demands that drivers drive hurt. There no provision for sitting out with an injury.

Very true. The drivers are under great stress to perform and that requires driving hurt. IMO the real faults lies with the medical staff. They know the forces the body suffers with each crash and should do thorough examinations. Neil Bonnett never should have been in a race car. He was told another crash could kill him and yet he was cleared to drive. Drivers do have the ultimate responsibilities to protect themselves and fellow competitors however as it was said in another post is it realistic to leave that decision in the hands of the driver? They wont get out of the car unless they are told to.

Blah Blah Blah. The facts tell the story better than we can.If you drive the right car with the right team, and sponser Nascar ain't gonna do a damn thing to keep an injured driver from running unless he is in a wheelchair. ;)

Maybe we should have designated drivers. If a guy is hurt, his team could pick from a pool of drivers to use as a replacement. original driver gets the points. Replacement driver gets $$$$. This way drivers who are hurt get a chance to heal without taking a hit in the points. Just a thought,
