July 18, 1958: First Grand National race of Richard Petty. Petty, 20, finishes 17th in the 19-car field, bowing out after crashing. He is credited with completing 55 laps of the 100-lap race at Canadian Exposition Stadium in Toronto. Talk about short tracks: The race length is 33.3 miles (.333-mile paved track). Also notable: The winner is Petty’s dad, Lee Petty. Both Pettys drive 1957 Oldsmobiles. Richard competes in nine of the 51 races in ’58. This is the only Grand National/Cup race run at Exposition Stadium.
