July 24, 1971: Richard Petty leads 400 of the 420 laps of the Nashville 420 at .596-mile Nashville (Tenn.) Speedway en route to his 14th Cup victory of the season. Bobby Allison runs only 22 laps but leads 20 before retiring with suspension problems. He finishes 27th. Petty finishes the season with 21 victories, and Allison has 11, giving the two drivers victories in two-thirds of the season’s 48 races.
