BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. had seen this movie before, and he knew how it was going to end. He wanted the 8. He went after the 8. But deep down, he knew he would never get it.

"Personally, I sort of planned for this," he said. "I've been in these negotiations with the same person before, and they've never worked out in our favor. I knew this was the way it was going to be. I just didn't have the guts to tell my fans. They were holding out and hoping it would work out. I didn't have the guts to tell them it was just a waste of time hoping that would happen."

"If I was to get the 8, and allow Teresa to have limited control of it, I'd still have to deal with her, and that wasn't what I wanted"
Dale Earnhardt Jr.That much became evident this week, when Hendrick Motorsports announced that Earnhardt's trademark car number will not follow NASCAR's most popular driver from Dale Earnhardt Inc. to his new home for 2008. (read more) Despite the work of his sister and manager, Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, despite the help of DEI president Max Siegel, the quest was scuttled for the same reason Earnhardt Jr. was unable to obtain an ownership share of the organization his late father founded.

Teresa Earnhardt refused to give up control. Earnhardt Jr. said Saturday at Michigan International Speedway that his stepmother, who owns DEI, wanted a share of licensing revenues from the number. Earnhardt Jr. even offered to return the No. 8 to DEI after he retired from driving, but ultimately negotiations fell apart in an episode that further underscored the growing bitterness of the division between the driver and his father's widow.

"I'm not going to sit here and get personal about this. The personal stuff is way far away from the racetrack. It's upsetting as hell, and unfortunate. But you know, that's just what happens sometimes. Like I say, I kind of had an idea that we were going to come down this road and have to take another turn. I knew this was the way it was going to happen. I'm not really all that surprised," he said.

"I knew I wasn't going to get the number a long time ago, but you wait and wait and wait. Kelley is working, trying to talk to Max, and Max is trying to help. Max tried his butt off to try and make it work, to talk some sense into [Teresa]. But she either feels too personal about the number, or the rift between me and her is too personal. I can totally understand. If I were in her shoes, I would probably be inclined to keep the number myself. But I will say that Max tried really, really hard. We had a deal that if we did get the number, I'd get him a set of golf clubs made by adidas. Unfortunately, he won't be getting his clubs."

History wasn't on Earnhardt's side. While car numbers are owner by NASCAR, they're distributed to car owners, and traditionally stay in the same shop even if a driver leaves. That's what happened at Roush Fenway Racing, which kept the No. 6 even after Mark Martin, the driver who made it famous, moved on.

"I know it is standard procedure for the owners to build equity in the number. That's what stays with them," said Martin, who now drives part-time for DEI. "The drivers take their superstardom wherever they may, when you make that choice to go. Dale Earnhardt won the rookie of the year and his first championship in the No. 2, then raced the No. 15, and then he raced the No. 8 on [Busch] cars all through the '80s. If you do the history instead of look at the last five or seven years, if you do the history and present it, then there's a whole different thing to it besides race fans.

"Dale Jr. made a choice to make a change in his career, to change his path and to give it a new start and to go put himself in a position to go win his first championship, and I think that's great. But that also came with the chance that the number would stay with Dale Earnhardt Inc., where it has been since 1984."

Jeff Gordon can imagine a similar reaction from car owner Rick Hendrick -- Earnhardt Jr.'s new boss beginning next season -- if he asked to take his trademark No. 24 with him to another team.

"If I said, 'I'd like to take the 24 with me,' he would laugh at me," Gordon said. "You know, I understand if Teresa wants to keep the 8 and use the 8. I think it's going to make it very tough for any other driver to get behind the wheel of that car, and I think if she doesn't use the 8, I think that it's really a shame that he wasn't able to get it. But as long as she used it, she thinks there's as much a tie to it with DEI than anything, then I understand why they wouldn't want to let go of it."

But it also has a tie to Earnhardt Jr., one much deeper and more personal than the numeral on apparel worn by his fans. He chose the 8 because his grandfather Ralph raced it, because of its significance within the family history. He intimated Saturday that his new number at Hendrick will have an 8 somewhere in it. "Hold on. Hang tight," he said, when asked about all those fans with No. 8 tattoos.

"I'm definitely going to look at some 80s and things like that. That's just common sense," he said. "I want a number that I'm going to like, and it's going to be a number I like and one I design. I'll design the shape and the look. It will be mine, and we'll build a new identity with that. Starting with such a clean page next year anyway, maybe it's for the best, sort of a lesson in disguise to make that clean break.

"Because when I walk away from DEI, I wanted no ties whatsoever. If I was to get the 8, and allow Teresa to have limited control of it, I'd still have to deal with her, and that wasn't what I wanted. We have to let the 8 go, and we have to get something new."

I figured it was Teresa's control issues that scuttled the negotiations.

If you take the magazine NASCAR Illustrated, there was pic of Teresa sitting in a chair in front of an abstract painting of DE --- that pic sent chills down my spine --- ice cubes wouldn't melt in her mouth.

I get that shre helped built DEI but this is ridiculous.

She's vying for too much power, it will backfire on her. I hope it does.

Seems like it is a dead issue. I believe it is time for Jr to move on, get a new number, and make it even more popular than the #8 was. The number doesn't make the driver, the driver is the one that popularizes the number.

Does anyone besides me think that Max will leave DEI when his contract is over?

Junior is an alright guy & everything but this is just some crybaby stuff here. If she owns the 8, she can do what she sees fit. She was Dale srs wife after all, right ?? If he wants to change teams, then do so & drive whatever number he has been given. Isn't like he's been in that number for two decades or anything. Just cracks me up to see everyone down on the cold, cold teresa. Well, guess what..junior wants his way, too, after he burned the DEI bridge by running his mouth about step momma the first time. Title of this thread is pretty funny IMO,considering junior is the one wanting control of his old number. This really shouldn't even be making the news...it's kinda ridiculous.

Remind me again how long Martin drove the #6. Since 1988?? I don't think I ever heard him crying that he couldn't take that number with him. Seems like he don't care what number is on the car as long as he's behind the wheel...

I bet I know how to pry the #8 loose ---- ask NASCAR for the #3 ! !

I bet that 8 would come across so fast that it'd make Junior's nose bleed. LOL

For me, I don't care what number he drives

There was never any connection with Mark and the #6 other then roush. Junior felt he could carry on a legacy with the #8 seeing as his grandpa and his daddy used it. I totally understand why he wanted it. Why the hell do people think he is whining about it? Junior had the chance to further plant the seed showing how his step mom is a cold hearted bitch in the eyes of Junior Nation. Not that I totally agree with that however I am sure that he will be smiling his ass off anytime Junior Nation gives her a mouth full of what will probably be some pretty nasty boos and low blow comments anytime she makes an appearance at a race track.

Mark Martin was the #6 as much as Earnhart was the #3 they made those numbers. Junior didn't make the #8. The whole paw paw drove it crap...if that meant anything, that alone would outweigh his problems with teresa & he would stay at DEI. Tell you what, this fall, I'll ask him myself & see what he says. I'll let you know....

Dale, Junior brought all this on himself and to look for sympathy from fans now he can't secure the #8 is silly. People are beginning to see a different side of Dale, Jr. and it ain't pretty. Dale, is beginning to sound like Tony "the official whiner of NASCAR" Stewart.

I have a suspicion if any of us were in a similar position, wherein we were sole stockholders of DEI, and the son who was employed by DEI, stepped up at contract renewal time and demanded fifty-one percent ownership, our reaction would be identical to Teresa's. No majority ownership, no #8 and no contract renewal.

Teresa might be cutting off her nose to spite her face but I think she will come out of this okay. Of course I have been wrong on numerous occasions so consider this opinion with caution.:)

Or, to put it in terms of our lives, quit your job and ask to take your chair with you to your next job. Explain to them how much that chair really means to you. See how many employers would let you do that.
Stuff is bought for a position. When you leave that position, even if you stay with the same organization, often times you have to leave that stuff behind and you get different stuff.
For him to blame Teresa is unfortunate. It shows that maybe he still has some growing up to do. He should grab his grapefruits, man up and move on. If his relationship with Teresa is damaged this behavior does nothing to repair it.

I do not think Junior gives two squats about repairing it.

I think Teresa's comments to the Wall Street Journal on Dec 14 is what made the relationship public.

"Right now the ball's in his court to decide on whether he wants to be a NASCAR driver or whether he wants to be a public personality."

I do not think Junior gives two squats about repairing it.

If this is true then he should let it go. Move on. Don't look back. But all this crying about her being unfair for not letting him have the number, his trying to bribe Max to get the number for him, give me a freaking break.
Poor Max don't get his golf clubs now. :(

I can see both sides of this thing. I can see where Jr would want to take it with him and where she would want to keep it. It seems like it would be a good PR move for Teresa to work out something to let Jr have the number, but I don't see her improving her image that much in the eyes of most fans anyway. All in all, I just don't see where it really matters that much either way.

for her it's all about the $ but that #8 ain't worth squat without jr. now if she was smart she would put mark in the 8 so she would still get a little $ but if she would do that then i would have to buy another flag for my dad cause for his birthday i just bought a 01.

i'm sure if nothing else ella sophia was on the table in exchange for the 8 too.

hey, she is first born of any of the hendrick teams right now.

There is another kid in the HMS fold.

Ricky's fiancée, Emily Maynard, was pregnant with his child at the time of his death. His daughter, Josephine Riddick "Ricki" Hendrick, was born June 29, 2005.

Guess who has been dating Emily...Dale Earnhardt Jr

Junior was never going to get the #8 for two reasons. One, to sell more shirts, hats, die casts, etc. with a new number. It's just like the commercial he did a few years ago. Two, Hendrick wasn't going to spend a lot of money to get it knowing all the additional money that could be made from a new number. I'm sure Rick sat down with Junior and gave him the "team first" talk and how he's with a new team and it will be a new beginning for him. Junior responded by saying "yeah, you're right, what's my percentage?" and moved on.

He's using this opportunity to trash Teresa even more knowing she wasn't going to give it up and Daddy Rick wasn't going to pursue it.

I agree. :)

New number or not he is still going to have a new sponsor which would make people buy more t-shirts.

If Jr keeps his mouth shut, some of you guys will say he needs to grow some balls and say what is on his mind.....if he says what is on his mind...he's whining....no matter what he says or does...some of you...are always going to give him s***....he cant win.

To me...its a bad PR move on DEI's side.....they've lost the PR battle with Jr and a lot of that is because Teresa will not go public about anything...she hasnt told her side of the story.

She doesn't owe us an explanation. She may be taking the high road. She may not care what the fans think. As Brian France has shown, just hand over your money and STFU.

Same way with Gordon. He can't win for losing with the fans.

Looks as though both sides are as stubborn as mules, but I've got to side with DEI on this one. While it's true that Jr made the #8 what it is today, many drivers have done that to a particular number. Just think of #9 or #6. The men who made those numbers famous are now driving cars of a different number. It used to be that guys would come up and "pay their dues" to get into a top dollar car. When that was the case, some of them went from car to car before they hit the big times. Today, it's a different story and these kids are now able to hop right into a very competitive car and if it's their first and they are successful, it's almost like they own that number. Not even Jeff Gordon owns that famous number 24, but he will always be associated with that number, like Earnhardt and Petty with the #3 and #43. Rusty Wallace, a former champ never won the title in the #2 car, but that is the number that he is most famous for.

The biggest mistake I believe that Jr made in all of this is that he made it all public. He even states that he knew this would happen and yet he still went public with it. I don't know if it was to try and give more grief to DEI or what, but he should have just kept quiet about it, or let Hendrick do all the talking.

I like Jr but was never a fan of his father so in a way, I'm a newbie to the Earnhardt fandom. But though I like the kid as a driver, his business sense just might not make sense. First off, I could never understand why he believed that he should have controlling interest in DEI. If Dale Sr. had willed it to him, then I could understand, but that wasn't the case. My opinion is that Jr just doesn't like his step-mother and he'd like to have all that his father had. Maybe one day if Jr ever gets married and has kids, he might understand it all a bit more.

I was never a Sr fan either. Far from it though I didn't want to see him be hurt let alone killed. Everyone keeps saying a number don't mean anything. If that is so then put the #3 back in the pot.

As for all of this going public. The first comment I remember hearing was from Teresa Earnhardt. While in NYC she said Jr needed to make up his mind if he wanted to be a driver or not. (something to that effect) Until that I didn't hear anything from Jr or Kelly.

barely..my comment earlier was basically pointed at you....doesnt matter what said or not said...your always going to find a way to say something against jr.

i hate to see him in another number next year...but the more i think about it...the more i like him driving something else, its more of a clean break from DEI...if Teresa wants to run off the only thing thats kept that company in business the last few years....(Earnhardt fan base)...then let her.

Are you talking to me...are you talking to MEEEEEE!!!!!one!!juannnnn

Easy on him bp, he's still a newbie here.

Go Panther, you will find that while there are those like bp, myself and some others that we won't pull punches as to who we like or dislike. We all pretty much know that ol' bp doesn't like Lil' E, but you just need to know that he only got out of the hospital a few months ago and the doctor told me that his mind has been gone for years. Anyway, just pat him on the head and tell him that he's a good little boy and he'll be fine. Just don't stick your tongue out at thim. He'll pee his pants and holler at you. :D

ROTFLMAO @ buckaroo! Glad I wasn't taking a drink of my tea as I read your post!!! :XXROFL:

I was not a fan of Jr in his early days of driving but have become a fan of his along the way. I do think though that it is time for him to drop this stuff with DEI and get on with his career.

hey i aint a newbie here....just changed my name...used to be This Buds for Me.

if Teresa wants to run off the only thing thats kept that company in business the last few years....(Earnhardt fan base)...then let her.

I'd be willing to place a wager on DEI not only staying in business after the loss of jr & his fan base, but also gaining strenth & becoming more of a force on the track.:)
