MADISON, N.C. - - Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon will be the primary sponsor on the No. 70 Chevrolet Impala SS driven by Jeremy Mayfield in the 50th running of the Daytona 500. The Piedmont Distillers brand is named for company co-owner and 1960 Daytona 500 champion Junior Johnson, who will drive the pace car and lead the field prior to the start of the Daytona 500.
“I’ve done a lot of things in my life, and my history in the moonshine business is no secret,” Johnson said. “We can do things legally that we couldn’t do back in the old days. I own part of a company that makes Moonshine, and our Midnight Moon is sponsoring a car in the 500. I never would have believed this was possible. It’ll be a neat deal to see Jeremy drive the Midnight Moon car in the 50th Daytona 500.”
“We are thrilled to partner with Haas CNC Racing for the 50th Daytona 500,” Piedmont Distillers president Joe Michalek said. “This team has demonstrated its ability to succeed on the track by placing both its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series entries in the top 35 of last year’s owner’s points. In addition, Jeremy Mayfield is a proven driver with three top-five finishes among six top 10s at Daytona International Speedway.”
Mayfield has been competing in NASCAR’s premier series since 1993 and begins his stint as the driver of the No. 70 Haas CNC Racing this season. He has recorded five wins among 48 top fives and 96 top-10 finishes and has earned more than $32 million in his career. Mayfield has also started nine races from the pole position, including the 1996 Diehard 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. His best season was 1998 when he finished seventh in the season standings.
“Being able to hook up with a legend like Junior Johnson and Midnight Moon for the 50th Daytona 500 is an honor,” Mayfield said. “I know Scott (Riggs) and I both admire what Junior has done for this sport, and I hope to give Midnight Moon a great run during Speedweeks.”
“Junior Johnson and Midnight Moon have a great story to tell and one that is instrumental to NASCAR’s rich history,” Haas CNC Racing general manager Joe Custer said. “We’re excited to be a part of it and look forward to helping them expand into Florida. This is an exciting program for Haas CNC Racing.”
Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon has been a tremendous success since its launch in May of 2007. The Carolina Moonshine brand is currently distributed in 12 states and will launch in Florida during Speedweeks.
“The past nine months have just been incredible for Midnight Moon,” Michalek said. “It is flying off the shelves, and thankfully, consumers keep coming back for more. Our partnership with Haas CNC Racing is the perfect way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Great American Race, Junior Johnson’s historic 1960 Daytona win and the Florida debut of Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon.”
