Juniors side of the story

Read something hearing him on the radio,. I have no clue what he said on the radio but his is the text of his press conference when he talks about tangling with Ward.

WHAT WAS THE DEAL WITH 22 CAR AND WHAT WERE YOU THINKING WHEN YOU SAW HIM STANDING ON THE TRACK? "I was real disappointed that happened. I don't really keep it no secret when I wreck somebody. I don't do it that often. Hopefully for sure Ward knows that that wasn't intentional. I kind of got a run up on him off of 2 and he made a real abrupt entry going into 3 and I checked up; I couldn't get out from under him, keep from spinning him out. I tried slamming on the brakes, did everything I could to keep from spinning him out. What else am I supposed to do? Of course, he showed his emotions there, real colorful. I didn't mind. I was disappointed that he didn't get whatever he threw into the car Œcause I'd like to have seen what it was. It's disappointing. I like Ward and we don't really talk that much. Of course, I don't talk to too many drivers. I never had no problem with him. I just hope he can kind of see a little bit of my side of it."

I think JR. Is exagerating just a bit. I really doubt that he slammed on the brakes etc. He may have tried to check up but it just wasnt enough. Ward was in the wall and JR was the driver who put him there. Or as Jr would put it "I dont do it that Often"...sorry JR but that doesnt cut it.

Wonder if Ward buys that.:) I don't think Jr wrecked him on purpose but I also don't think Jr tried quite as hard as he said to avoid bumping Ward either.....it was a racing thing: " Do what you have to do to pass the guy in front for you".:D

Ward didn't really have a whole lot to say in post race.

WARD BURTON (No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Intrepid R/T) "Junior just didn't take his time. We'd been giving and taking out there all day. I've got some really good words for him that I can't say. I've got to control myself right now. Rusty and I raced lap after lap and didn't rub or nothing. Junior gets under me for one lap and I'm in the wall. We had a top five or top 10 car, too. I don't have anything good to say so I'm not going to say anything else. I don't think I touched anybody all night. One lapped car kept me down low and we rubbed a little bit on the side of his door. I was driving clean trying to get to the finish to see what we had. Junior got under me a little bit for one lap. He took it, and I'm in the wall. End of story. End of race for the Caterpillar Dodge."

I love Ward, and JR........... But JR, let the jury decide... nice cover up story tho. It reminds me of Nixon and Clinton.."I'm not a crook" and "I never had sex with her"

Now we have "Bristolgate":p

Jr's full of crap. I mean, you gotta be a real prick to get Ward Burton pissed off like that.

Right after it happened he said on the radio that if Ward isn't "going to give [him] time to check up he's gonna get punted out".

His statements make less and less sense with each passing week. Just these rambling stream of consciousness type things that make little sense.

Nice try JR. He will get his and I will love every minute of it. That last name only goes so far you know. Oh, one little quote that was left out of Ward's post-race interview "I just wish I had something I could shoot through the window" GO WARD GO!!!
Ward being a hunter I would say JR. will be his next prey.

you all make me laugh...i guess everyone see's things different when they happen......how big of a topic would this be if it wasn't an earnhardt involved?......and like I said in the other thread....I like wahd....he's havin a bad year and is frustrated...he finally has a good run and can't finish it.....but its bristol and chit happens...if that was intentional, then robby gordon was drivin like a "sane" man!!...LOL

It would be a big topic, read through some of the past threads when drivers did the exact same thing.

No one is picking on Jr. He punted someone and deserves to be called out on it. The only people that don't seem to think so are Jr pom-pom wavers...no shock there.

LOL...ok..don't own any poms poms...lol.....and no matter who I am a fan of (which is about half to 3/4 the drivers out there)..if it looks intentional i say it is....and to me that wasn't......and i am and will defend Jr and my opinion on this one....next itme could be different.....:)

:p It looked like to me that Ward came down to go into turn and JR. was int under him and Ward tapped him. But I could be wrong I have been before.

It looked exactly like about 5 other wrecks on Sat. One guy was trying to get to the bottom with a guy on the bottom that wasn't giving. Both drivers are at fault. I don't think Jr tried to spin him, but definately didn't back off when Ward came down. Can't blame Ward for being mad, but he's been guilty of the same thing in the past.

The full text of Junior's comments about Bristol:

http://www.dalejr.com/story.asp

Dale Jr’s Quotes: "I’m really happy with that finish. I’m really happy with my guys. We have had a bad middle-of-the-season, and we all got together and decided we were going to buckle down and try harder to get ourselves back to the competitive team we believe we should be. It’s been a great two weeks for us, and I think it will only get better. We’re excited about doing this every week. We’re feeding off each other right now, and I think I’m getting along better with Tony Jr. (Eury, car chief) than any time since the Busch Series days."

"I was trying to keep this as uneventful of a race as possible. I wasn’t so confident in my car even though we led a lot of laps, so I kinda let Jeff (Gordon) go, and let him lead the way through the lapped traffic. I think we were 13th with 100 (laps) to go, and it got really wild after that. I really just followed the 2 (Wallace) and the 24 (Gordon) cars right up through the rest of the leaders. The three of us had fresher tires than any of those guys, so it was really just hoping we had enough laps to catch and pass them all..."

(About an incident with Ward Burton on lap 404) "I am disappointed that it happened. I don’t make it a secret when I wreck someone, and I don’t do it a lot, but I hope Ward knows it was not intentional at all. I had a great run on him on the back stretch and he was protecting his spot and made kind of an abrupt move into turn three. I couldn’t get out from under him in time. I tried to lock ’em up, but it wasn’t enough and I hit him..."

(About seeing Burton climb out of his car and throw his padded heel protectors at Dale Jr. as he passed on the track) "I was disappointed that he didn’t get whatever it was he threw in the car with me. I at least wanted to see what he was throwing at me."

Best Radio Conversations

The rapid-fire sub-16-second laps at Bristol make it almost impossible for the driver to speak with the crew during green flag runs, so almost all of the chatter came during the many yellow-flag periods of the race. The following exchange took place during a caution period beginning on lap 315.

Dale Jr. "How many cars are on the lead lap?"

Tony Eury Jr: "14... but the 99 car is pretty beat up, so there’s 13 good cars on the lead lap..."

Dale Jr: "Wow... what happened to everybody? We haven’t lapped THAT many cars..."

Tony Jr: "Yeah man, from my seat you’ve been doing pretty good..."

Dale Jr: "OK Tony Jr., for the rest of the night, if I say the car is pushing, you just get on the radio and tell me to quit overdriving the car, OK?"

Tony Jr: "10-4. You’re little hook looks good from here." (Dale Jr. was purposely hooking his left front tire on the apron of turn one. The unusual move was actually helping to get the car turned into the first and second turns.)

After the final stop of the night, the Bud car restarted the race in 13th position with less than 125 laps to go.

Dale Jr: "Sorry guys. That was a good stop, but I could have gotten in the (pit) box a lot better. I just couldn’t see those guys in the (car number) 2 pits (crew members from Rusty Wallace’s team, who were pitting immediately behind the Bud pit stall). I just don’t wanna hit anybody or run over those boys."

Tony Jr: "It’s alright. We’re gonna watch you fight back here through the field and we’ll be doin’ well."

Dale Jr: "We’ve already done well, let’s keep it up. We’re the last car on the lead lap, right?"

Tony Jr: "Yeah, 10-4."

Dale Jr: (speaking to Ty Norris, team spotter) "OK Ty, you’re work is cut out for ya..."

Ty Norris: "Alright man. We can do this. Ya gotta believe in me here. Let’s go!"

Dale Jr.: (After the incident with Ward Burton) "That was an accident man, let ’em know..."

Norris: "I know... You had a helluva run on him there. I’ll talk with the (car number) 22 spotter..."

Dale Jr. : "Alright..."

Dale Jr. circled the track one more time, only to see Burton waiting for him on the track. Burton threw his foam heel protectors at the Bud car.

Dale Jr: "Hey... did he make it in here with that?"

Tony Jr: "What? His booties?"

Dale Jr: "I dunno if they made it in the car or not."

Tony Jr: "Nah. They’re laying on the track..."

Norris: "Alright man, it’s over with. It’s past, 94 laps to go... let’s go..."

In case Junior hadn't noticed, the line at Bristol is to dive down low in the corner.

The last time I checked, the lead car picks his line, it's up to the trailing car to pass him using a DIFFERENT line.

If that means Ward came down into Junior, fine. But has anyone else noticed that Junior uses the same defense every time he spins someone? Now why in the world would all these professional drivers ONLY "come down" on Junior? I smell a rat, and he's wearing Drakkar.

If JR. was gonna wreck somebody, you would know it, there would be no debate. He would do it "old school" Earnhardt style!

hey its Bristol, **** does happen.....cars do collide......this WASNT THE ONLY WRECK OF THE WEEK....this happened more than once this week....where are the threads about those wrecks

and where the hell are the threads about Ward saying on TV he wished he had something he could shoot through Jr's window?

so its ok to say you want to shoot someone?

Thank you, TRL!

For the life of me, it looked nothing like the punting Robby Gordon gave Jimmie Johnson.

But I understand Ward's being angry about it all the same. Hitting the wall just plain sucks.

The thing that made it so bad, was where on the track it happened. Cars are so light in the backend right there, you could literally shove one around with your hand(if you could touch it--LOL)>

Yeah, they were saying all night how the corners were the worst possible place to do that sort of thing...

I honestly wish it never happened. Junior should learn to be more patient, and in the right places. I mean, I do like that he's being aggressive again, that he's even in a position worthy of being on camera (other than a wreck), but I'm not so sure finishing third was worth all this backlash. :uhmnotsur

OK, I'll play. But I get to use Junior's rules this time. Seems fair to me.

Ward didn't say anything about shooting anyone. And even if he did, he didn't. Even if he shot someone, he really didn't. And even if he did, it wasn't his fault. And even if it was his fault, it wasn't really because he said so. And besides, even if he did shoot someone, Junior ran in front of the bullet. Yeah, that's it. So see, it really wasn't what 300 million people saw. It's what Ward says it is, because he says it. And even if he didn't say it, he would have if he had thought of it. And just because he didn't think of it doesn't mean he didn't mean to think of it.

That crap makes me sick. Bet your sweet ass that WHEN Ward gets him back, it'll be done right. I hope it's when Junior is doing well and Ward is laps down.

Besides, Ward didn't say specifically WHAT he wanted to shoot in there. Maybe it was a puff of Drakkar, who knows?

If Ward punts Jr., I'll be interested in hearing what Jr fan have to say then. Will they give the rubbin is racing lines, or will they cry foul? Stay tuned!!

Depends if I feel it's deliberate or not. Or deserved or not.

Mind you, I'm ABSOLUTELY NOT saying that I think Ward deserved getting punted. I do not.

But if Junior is blocking someone (again, I don't necessarily think Ward was doing this at that moment), and it's nearing the end of the race, then I'd fully expect the same unpleasant result. No, I wouldn't be happy about it either.

And that's racing, isn't it? Punt one week, get punted the next.

Ward did say he wanted to shoot something through Jr's car

takin it to far.

i think it was an accident....its bristol....that **** happened all weekend.

To add even more fuel to the fire, I just found these Junior scanner samplings from Saturday's race on another board, as recalled by a fan who was in attendance. I can't attest to the accuracy of them, especially as they're now third hand, but they sound about right.

Disclaimer: These are not my opinions!!

*********************************************
Well, after being awake for 25 straight hours, then sleeping for maybe two during the drive home, I got a two-hour nap, and that's not been enough to calm my surly attitude after watching Jeffy once again snatch a victory away from Russell Wallace. That sukced. Not to mention that my brother, a big Ward Burton fan, was none too happy with Junior. We were in grumpy moods after the race, to say the least.

If anybody who's never gone to Bristol gets a chance to go, seize the moment. The place is awesome. I love the speed of Daytona, but Bristol and its atmosphere are awesome. I had a poster made up to hold for the cameras, but after finding out our seats were in row 58 of the third turn, I didn't feel like going all the way back down and standing near the catch fence. Also, before the race I bought two new scanners, and I quickly realized that the dude selling them made everything look so easy to program, and I quickly fudged the thing up so that I could only listen to Junior's frequency. Well, if I'm only going to get one driver, it might as well be him. Listening to him and the crew was worth the price of my scalped ticket.

About the incident with Ward: "I know he's mad, but I didn't mean to do that. It's not like I drove through the f*cking fuel cell." When asked what Ward threw at him: "His booties."

About Robby Gordon, during a caution: "That Robby Gordon gets on my last f*cking nerve. He gave me absolutely no room for error on the backstretch." Tony Eury, Jr., when the black flag came out for Robby: "The 31's getting the black flag for punting the 48 on the restart. He should've got it 250 laps ago." Lord knows I loved those comments.

Ty Norris, about coming up on Mark Martin trying to stay on the lead lap: "Be careful coming up on the 6. He's panicking, trying to stay on the lead lap." Also, earlier in the race, about Kyle Petty: "Be careful, the 45 didn't get his lap back, and he's really pissed off at Jeff. He could have his hands full on the restart." Being that I love Kyle Petty and hate Jeffy, I loved it when Kyle squeezed him up into the wall after taking the caution. Unfortunately, I missed the beginning of the incident, looking somewhere else, but the roar of the crowd THROUGH my headphones made me look back up front, just in time to see Kyle next to Jeff in turn two.

Tony Eury, Sr., on the bad pit stop that put Junior out last on the lead lap, late in the race: "Gawddamn it, guys! We're trying to win a race here!!!" Junior added, "That's sh!t's gonna stop. There's gonna be a change. Rear tire carrier and changer, don't get down, but there's gotta be a change." Later, on, though, Junior must've felt bad because he said, "It's partly my fault, too, guys; I didn't get in there as far as I could have. I was afraid to hit some of the dudes from the 2." Tony Eury, Jr., added: "We're packed in so close, the guys from the 2 and our guys keep running into each other." Junior replied, "10-4. I'll try to get in better next time."

About winning the race, Tony Eury, Jr.: "Don't be afraid to use your bumper." Junior replied,"Here? Don't worry about that. I'll do it if I have to." There was a silence, and then Junior asked, "Are you guys insinuating that I'm getting soft?"

There were some other good things that I've forgotten about, but it was great listening to them on the scanner. That is one thing that Nascar had better never take away, or its attendance will flop immediately.
