Just An Idea

I like this

Roush would like teams to get mulligans: Jack Roush, co-owner of Roush Fenway Racing [#'s 6,16,17,99], has one suggestion to spice up the Sprint Cup season and Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Give each team a do-over. "Think about giving each team a mulligan," Roush said. "Have one race you can throw out for each team during the first 26 races and one for the 10 races (in the Chase). That would mean, until you use your mulligan, you could run with great dispatch and lack of restraint, much like you had last Saturday night in the Budweiser Shootout. That wasn't a points race and everybody said, 'Let's throw caution to the wind and see what we've got here.' You'd see the races a little more exciting if they could discount one as they made their strategies."(Kansas City Star)(2-26-2012)

Accidents, blow'd motors are all part of the game. Suck it up.

Willing to say bet ol' Jack had a bean counter go over race results and he came up with numbers that show this would benefit his teams.

Jack would love to have been able to throw away Talladega in '09 during the chase. This year, it would have helped Tony to beat Carl by a bunch of points.

I don't like this. I think it is every bit as bad an idea as the Chase itself was. Every race should count, period.
Makes no sense to me, I can't see how it would matter. Drivers are always running for points and will always take that into consideration first. Not one of Jacks' better ideas IMO.

I am not on board with the idea of a mulligan but a track like Talladega has no effing business being in The Chase.

You know , there is a possibility that a rule like this could backfire on Jack by helping the underfunded teams more than the big five .Roush and Hendrick normally come to the track prepared to run well right off the truck .Underfunded teams are more hit and miss ,hopefully improving during practice and qualifying. The worst race of a bad team would normally be a lot worse than the worst race of a top team.(crashes being the exception)

Without wanting to spend the time researching this..... I'm going out on a limb here assuming that Jack reworked the numbers from last year and his new idea would have resulted in Carl Edwards, 2011 Sprint Cup Champion. Just a hunch.
