It’s down to Richmond as a “must win” for Joey otherwise they are on the outside looking in for this season. They could still do it of course but the way they’ve been running this year, it looks like a tall order. That penalty that “encumbered” their one win is looking bigger and bigger all the time.

If they miss because of that, the Captain won’t be very happy I’m sure.
 
If he and BK were racing for the win and BK put him in the wall,,I'd be bigly sad....OH NO I wouldn't!!:lol2:
 
Making the chase will mean nothing really because he will make an early exit with what the Fords have. The new nose for Toyota was a game changer once they got the balance right. This was a smart move by Toyota and they will be rewarded with the 2017 championship because of it.
Next year the GM boys will have a new car as well so that will equalize those tems in the latter half of 2018.
After that I hear Ford is coming out with a new Edsel for nascar.

I really don't have the confidence in the Ford engines being supplied to all teams.
HMS send an engine tuner with each engine leased out. I wonder if Roush/Yates just ships them by Fed Ex.?

Might as well get it together for next year, Logano and company just do not have the speed.

I go with everything but the championship..the way it is now it's the cheaters ball. they should inspect the cars about a week ahead of time and impound them IMO. I know Johnson's car didn't have a rev limiter on it or it was set on moon walk because the last couple of restarts it reved to the moon. Pulled about three car lengths on Larson down the straight. Nascar with their B.S. rear gear limits..but that is another thread.
 
Yotas have a pretty big advantage this year with the 3rd nose in 4 years. Hard to say if they have an engine advantage with that being how it is with better corner speeds. Takes a lot of motor to overcome that advantage. Some of them might be thinking why try? Wait until it matters, things might get closer, Nascar has been known to make running changes, they gelded the Fords on aero this year already.
 
Based on what we've seen the past 15 races or so Joey will not have the speed to compete for a win. It's just not there this year .. no chase for you!!

For sure Gordon caught a break when Logano and Kenseth tangled. You never know until the checker waves. It's nothing like watching a team that is 30 points behind take all their timeouts, fouls, knees, out of bounds, and two minute warnings (gimics?) to string out a game for 20 minutes longer for nothing.
 
If I recall correctly Joey didn't even have the fastest car in the spring race either..

probably need to watch what he shows up with. He had a pretty fast car for Darlington to start with, qualified 8th. Car kept shutting off.

Yeah I definitely think he has more of a chance than people are giving him. All it takes is right positioning towards the end. He totally stole that chase race at Phoenix last year just by being in the right place at the end.
 
I'll never count them out til the checkers waves. If there's anyone I'd pick to win with their back against the wall it's the 22 team.

As a fan of his or not I've learned not to ever underestimate any these guys.

Joey ran 10-12th all day in the spring and won. While Toyota may have an advantage.. you never know when Truex might blow a tire and hit the wall in a fight for the lead with a few laps to go. ;) Lol

Yeah for sure Brad K had the fastest car by a mile that day but a bad stop at the end dropped him to 4th. Still he nearly ran Joey down and if there were 3 more laps we wouldn't even be talking about cucumbers
 
I said it back then when it got announced and a few people thought "oh it won't matter, he'll make the chase anyway, he'll get another win, he'll have the points." etc etc and I said that it could end up mattering if he doesn't get another win. He has one more chance to go, his bath is up against the wall so we'll see what they do. Wonder if he wins and they end up finding something wrong with the car after if we'll change chase stuff around again. Surely since all the photos would have been took after the race.
 
Probably the biggest story in NASCAR this year. Joey has won 16 times since the start of 2013, crazy to see him completely out of it this season. He is way too talented a driver

If Brad hadn't got his wins early he would be out as well. The Fords are not competitive right now
and I see nothing to indicate they will come to life this season. Brad at times looks like he may have something but it is short lived and it really shows he had to overdrive in the early part of the race. Once all teams have had a couple of pit stops Brad is running midpack.
 
Joey and team have had 21 races to get an un pickled win and they haven't been close all year. They would have to pull a rabbit out of the hat at this point.
 
despite all of the hoopla about stage racing, total win wise it is pretty equal. Same thing last year about all you heard from the press was about nothing but how great the Toyota's were. Same thing this year, it could be true, might not be at this point IMO. I think some of us are going to be disappointed when a car does well in the playoffs and gets eliminated by a car that has more stage racing points and is able to advance to the next level.I hope it doesn't happen but it's set up that way.

I honestly cant wait to see how the stage points affect the playoffs, I hope there is some semblance of full season performance taken into account. However I feel awful asking this are stage points the same as playoff points? What is the difference between the two? Do you still get playoff points once the playoffs start? I thought I would understand as the season progressed but I just havent been focused on it really, just taking each race as its own and figured if you win you're in.

I could be wrong but stage wins and stage points for placing in the top tens translate into playoff points. they continue to get playoff points in the playoffs until the final race. How they get to use them if they have a bad race? I don't have a clue if they can use all of them or add as much as they think they need to advance? Got me.

From what I understand, stage points award drivers for being in the top 10 with extra points to go towards their regular season points total. Only the stage wins apply to playoff bonus points which are worth one point and wins are worth five.

For example, if Kenseth finished ninth in the first stage, won the second stage and won the race this weekend, he would get points in the regular season for his win, finishing 9th in the first stage and winning the second which would handily move him up in the standings (sorry, I have no idea on the exact number of points). Then after the reset, in addition to whatever he has currently, he'd get a total of 6 more playoff points.

It's quite simple really... :sarcasm:

In all honesty it really is quite simple..

Drivers get 1 bonus point that they can carry throughout the playoffs by winning a stage.
Drivers get 5 bonus points for winning a race.
At the end of the regular season (tomorrow night) the guys who are top ten in points will get additional points to carry throughout the playoffs. 1st place gets 15, 2nd gets 12, etc.

All of the bonus points accumulated gets carried throughout the playoffs regardless. Drivers don't get to "choose" when to use bonus points, that would be a total mess.

For an example we'll use Martin Truex Jr. So far this season he's won 17 stages, won 4 races, and will finish 1st in points. This will add up to 52 points (17+20+15) if he doesn't win the race or any stages tomorrow night.
 
BTW Joey was second fastest in final practice..5 hundredths behind first. Qualifying will be big.

See this is why this is bs, just get rid of the Chase and the rest of the damn gimmicks. It's so convoluted and confusing, of course Nascar will make it even worse next year.
