Just The Stats: Rockingham

Going on stats alone it looks like Jeffy has this one..followed by DJ!!

And the stats will most likely hold up right up until they say "Gentlemen Start Your Engines!"

100% agreement there Tony!! It's always anyone's race this early at Rockingham!! Cool to cold weather on an old track!! That's what makes it so much fun!! :D

I think it'll come down to tire management. The Rock is an abrasive surface to put it kindly. Tire temps and wear are going to be big factors.

With that in mind, I'd lean more toward the longer established teams who have had less turnover in their pit crews. Rusty might not be a bad bet this week. Martin runs good there too if his engine stays together.

Now watch Jimmie Johnson win the dang thing. :p

Would love to see it! And, I'd settle for Mark Martin or Dale Jarrett! :p

The Rock certainly favors the veteran driver...

The last 8 winners are Bill Elliott, Dale Jarrett, Johnny Benson, Matt Kenseth, Joe Nemechek, Steve Park, Dale Jarrett, and Bobby Labonte...

A couple of young guys sprinkled in here and there, but in the age of young guns winning anywhere and everywhere, the Rock stands as a bastion of the veteran...

hmmm... I think I'll have to go look at all the tracks and see if anyone stacks up to the Rock in the last several years as far as veteran wins....

I'd also give a nod to one of the veterans here, especially with the softer tire compound in use now.I'd say Rusty Wallace or maybe Jeff Gordon :D
Let the real racing begin this weekend ;)

No softer tire beign used at the Rock. Same compund as last year.

The news softer tire doesn't come in to play until Las Vegas.

Darlington will. Bet anything on it. Some people never figure The Lady out.

I honestly think Ricky Craven will be one of the drivers to beat this weekend. Not only does he have a Darlington win, but Rockingham is probably his best track - six career top-5s there (out of 17 for his entire career), and 5th, 5th, 4th in the last three spring races there. If you need a dark horse, pick him.

Well thanks TonyB for the embarrassment, but glad U corrected My comment anyway :D
I still think a veteran will win regardless of tire compound used. ;)

And now I have to correct myself.

It is a slightly different tire this year as Rockingham.

Mark Keto Lead Engineer Goodyear Stock Car Tire Development:
"At Rockingham, we are introducing a new tire construction on each side of the car, though the compounds are essentially the same as last year. This new set-up is more forgiving and provides a broader operating window to allow drivers to 'hustle' the car a little more through the corners."

So it is somewhat different than last year, but still not the "softer tire" spoken of so much in the media that will debut in Las Vegas.

Harvick has never ran good at the Rock. Best finish is 14th. Don't expect him to do good Sun. But there is always hope.

Ok,I noticed that old "DW" was talking about a softer tire compound, during qualifying,so I was wondering what was up with that. Thanks for explainanation. ;)

The media hasn't exactly had a very good track record this year when talking about the tires...

Some interesting things I noticed when looking over that sight.

Kyle Petty has 3 of his 8 career Cup wins at Rockingham. :) I realize those occured quite a while ago, but hey it could happen again ;)

Tony Stewart, Sterling Marlin and several others have never won there at all.

Jeff Gordon has a slightly higher winning percentage at the Rock (4 out of 22 races entered for 18.18%) than he does as a whole (64 out of 366 for 17.48%). Go Jeff!
