Kasey Kahne, the hottest potential free agent in NASCAR entering the season, has signed a multiyear agreement to join Hendrick Motorsports in 2011, multiple sources close to negotiations confirmed to ESPN.com Tuesday.

The details of the deal, such as which car Kahne will drive, are still being finalized, sources said.

The prevailing thought is Kahne will occupy the No. 5 car currently driven by Mark Martin, sources said. Martin signed a contract extension last year through the 2011 season.

In 2008 Dale Earnhardt Jr. signed a five-year deal with Hendrick. Jimmie Johnson last year signed an extension through 2015, and Jeff Gordon has a lifetime contract.

Kahne is in the final year of his contract with Richard Petty Motorsports, and plans to finish the season in the No. 9 Ford, sources said. It is unknown whether Kahne's sponsors RPM and Budweiser will accompany him to HMS.

Hendrick Motorsports officials had no comment.

Calls placed to Kahne, who turned 30 last weekend, and to his agent were not returned.

Wow! This is a shock. I figured Hendrick was going to put Danica in the 5 car next year and changing the number to 7.;)

Well, i guess everybody was right- Kahne to stewart haas next year. After all, Hendrick does have 6 teams...

haha move over Jimmie!!! Finally a Silly Season that has some twists and GOOD stuff!!!
Congrats to Kasey (if true of course)! He deserves it!!!

Now Jimmie, Kasey is someone who PAID his dues :D

multiple times at that dump

It will be interesting if he ends up at Hendricks or a Hendricks satellite team. What could he do with some real machinery. Wonder if Bud will follow him?

I'm willing to bet Bud will follow him to SHR next year, then hendrick in 2012

hahahaha. Everybody knew he was gonna land there- Him and tony and good friends (one of Tony's few friends, i think).

If he ends up at SHR its just for 2011

Well yeah, till the 5 car is available.Hey Magnethead, what will the topic be tomorrow night? Just askin.

Moving to Stewart Haas or Hendrick will be a good move for Kasey.

He could do what was rumored that Keselowskiw would do and be and drive a quasi-Hendrick team at Phoenix. He would still be driving the #(0)9 in a way at least.

Ok, ya, wont happen.

Thought that he might go to Stewarts' team next year but didn't figure he would actually sign with Hendrick. I don't think anything is official yet Hendrick officials have not put out a statement confirming it. I think Martin will finish out his contract and drive through next year. If this is true, congrats to Kasey, I always liked the guy, he became my favorite driver after Bill got out of the 9 car.

Kahne at Hendrick. I would say that is a shocker but after Hendrick too Junior, I would say anything is possible.

My prediction is that Kahne will end up driving for Stewart-Haas next season and then begin piloting the 5 in 2012. In the 5 he will probably win a couple races, but will be no where near the standard that Mark has set the past couple of years.

at SHR for 2011, but it's basically Hendricks 5th and 6th teams, so To create a team that would only be alive for 1 year would be hard (to find employees), but at least Kasey would be in the Hendrick progrem.

great move for kasey. :) hendrick, bigger, faster, stronger. feel bad for aj piloting a sinking ship. wonder what nascar has to say about hendrick buying championships for years to come. i'm sure hendrick's move passes snuff with multi-team limitations but it's sort of throwing parity amongst organizations under the bus. all legal of course. <g> so who steps up to challenge hendrick's dominance now?

petty enterprises/rpm should be required reading in business cases for how to run a business into the ground. did richard make any right moves as a team owner after he retired?

Like another said- When Adam died, Petty's fate was set.

Rousch is the only one that can fight Hendrick. Hendrick is the only team that only has 1 owner.

I highly doubt Kahne will drive for SHR in 2011, then jump to the #5 in 2012. Tony will want someone long-term for a third team.

well Kasey has to go somewhere next year its not like he is just gonna sit out the whole 2011 season

Well I'm going to predict that Ray Evernham will be Kaseys' crew chief come next year and in 2012. I think Ray wants to get back up on the Box.

Don't forget, KK could race HMS equipment as Jr's cup team, especially if he brings Bud with him.

I don't see Bud coming with him. They didn't follow Jr there so I don't think they will follow KK.

That could happen but that would mean KK would have to qualify for the first 5 races. Not saying that he would not qualify his way in, but that would put a lot of pressure on him, even if he is in the best equiptment. I would think that KK would get Stewarts owner points from this year and Stewart could rely on his Past Champion provisional. Thats just my opinion.

as long as its not GoDaddy...the very thought scares me, the allstate commercials were bad enough
