Storyline – Keeping up with Kansas: Visiting Kansas Speedway twice per season, Goodyear is able to keep up with the track surface as it matures. Before the spring ’22 race, as NASCAR moved to the Next Gen car and the 18-inch bead diameter tire, Goodyear made a compound change for the Kansas tires to give the cars more grip. Then, as the sport learned about the Next Gen car and teams continued to find speed, Goodyear tested several tracks, studied race data and updated the construction and mold shape of its speedway tires. That resulted in a new tire set-up for the fall ’22 race at Kansas. The factors that need to be watched this weekend are the air pressure and geometry settings teams run on multiple corners of the car as they continue to look for performance gains.

“One of the biggest parts of our job is keeping up with race tracks as they age, looking at race data and listening to team input for deciding where we need to test to make improvements,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “Kansas was among a group of tracks – along with Las Vegas and Texas – where we adjusted our tire recommendation between the spring and fall races last year. In addition to race data from early 2022, we ran tests at Charlotte, Pocono and Michigan and developed a construction update that we introduced over the second half of last season. Those changes proved successful, so as we keep up with tracks, as well as the evolution of the Next Gen car and team set-ups, that is where we started this season.”

Notes – Cup cars on fall ’22 tire set-up at Kansas: Cup teams ran this same combination of left- and right-side tires at Kansas-2 last September . . . they have also run this same tire set-up twice already this season – at Fontana and Las Vegas . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, Cup cars will not run inner liners in any of their tires in 2023.

I see it's directly up against the F1 race in Miami. I really don't understand this. You have two large racing series that basically tell each other to go screw themselves and make fans choose one or the other.

I think if F1 moved up an hour and nascar move back an hr they would pretty much clear each other and could cross promote. But then again I'm just an idiot on an internet forum

I didn't see the Dover race until Wednesday evening. I stayed off here and had no problem avoiding spoilers.

The start times are up to the networks writing the checks.

Willy B gets the pole! As many races as I've been to, I've never had the chance to see my driver win in person. Neither Gordon or Byron. Byron is typically good at Kansas, so I always have hope that it will finally happen. Starting pole certainly adds to that optimism.

I truly think they work on handling characteristics versus outright raw speed. And we've seen that pay off more times than not. I will say starting position is a lot more imortant with this car tho so they may need to change course a little.

Still don't think he's fully back in the swing of things either.

WE always set up for the long run. Depends on where the yellows land, but I am not concerned if we have long runs. Four in the top 10 with OUR set up makes me smile. Bring it on.

I know they get a bad rep, but speedways are my favorite tracks.

Also, Chase is behind the ball in terms of reps this season, so it shouldn't come as a surprise if he's a bit behind the ball in practice/qualifying, especially if it's not a priority.

Larson flatters performance....the way the Driver of the 8--whose name shall not be spoken--did for US....kind of (he can't drive the Next Gen). The gap is closed IMO post louver and greenhouse IMO.

I love 1.5s.

Reps are found in the sim these days. If he isn't there, maybe he took up roller skating....with the snow melt and everything.

Hamlin, Reddick, Bell or Wallace I think one of them will win today.
I will be rooting for Larson, Berry, and Lajoie but I still the Toyotas are stronger this week.
