My cousin who is 46 had to have his leg amputated right below the knee. Started out he burnt both his feet on a heater. He couldn't feel how close he was. Is there something easier than crutches?? He has fell several times. It's only been two weeks. I know the cast is making the balance situation worse.
He is a diabetic. I found something called a knee waker or Roll-A- Bout. He will be fitted with a prostheses (sp) in about two to three weeks.

Hubby uses a walker outside and wheelchair inside. He burr walks up and down the stairs. He has a prosthesis but has rarely used it since his remaining toes were amputated about a year ago. Crutches require practice, practice, and more practice. His doctor said that the wound had to be completely healed when he lost the leg before he could even be fitted for the prosthetic leg, and that was 6 months!
Wishing your cousin the very best and attitude is very important!

The $3/4,000.00 power chairs seen onTV can be purchased USED on craigslist.org or eBay for around $600.! These are great around the house and can be resold later at very little loss. Several of my friends and relatives have used these with much sucess. Look around and you can find a bargin.
Betsy;)

Thanks Betsy, I'll look. My aunt had a power chair before she died. I'll call and see if my other cousin will sell it.
Kat, I thought fitting the prostheses in two weeks was way to soon. His attitude was good and he was ready to make the decision. He had one month to make it on his own. I think that helped. Since he has been falling so much, it is getting him down.

Kellogg, two weeks??? Medicaly WRONG, IMO! Hubby's leg was amputated in 2004 and he didn't get fitted for the prosthesis until 6 months later.
Hyperbaric treatment should be available as it speeds healing, but it's expensive.
Can he get Medicaid?

By the time they are suppose to fit him, it will be a total of 4 weeks. I have questioned them again. He has had hyperbaric treatment, but I don't know to what extent. When he lost his job he was able to qualify for Tenncare.

When Mr Kat had his toes amputated last year, they debrieded the wound about 12 weeks later and then he went to Hyperbaric treatment 5 days a week for 6 weeks.
He wasn't fitted for the toe prosthesis until the surgeon determined that the wound was completely healed.
I sure hope that your cousin is managing the diabetes!
