is from my neck of the woods. The picture was taken in Homer on the Kenai Peninsula.

We have hundreds of moose in town year round and often find them in our driveway, front yards and even had one in the entry of Safeway last fall. A cow moose in front of a library in Anchorage killed a pedestrian two years ago 'cause he got too close to her young calf.

Anyways nice to see a picture taken in Alaska posted from Atanta by an old classmate from Massachusetts. Ain't this internet thingy grand?:)

How do they handle wildlife in the town there?

They don't kill them do they?

No they don't kill them unless absolutely necessary in protection of life and property. Bears, moose, caribou, lynx are pretty regular visitors in the residential areas surrounding our small towns.

If a bear gets too agressive, it's got to be dealt with. Moose are passive unless you get between cow and calf, caribou are likewise, and lynx are too timid to stick around when spotted. The occasional coyote will dart into sight but they stay pretty much out of view.

We have lots of small critters around. Weasels/ermines, muskrats, beavers, otters, marten, voles, shrews, and arctic hares.

I lived for a summer in Gatlinburg. My apartment was 1 mile from the center of the main strip, and 500 feet from the National Park boundary, on a dead end road.

One morning I got up to go to work. Upon walking out the door, I turned and went back in. I called the Park Service, then my roommate who happened to work at the same place (Pizza Hut). I calmly told him that I would be late as there was a black bear asleep on the hood of my car.

The rangers were great. They got there right away, and recognized the bear. Seems she is a frequent visitor to town. They tranquilized her, as she had started to wake up (I guess all the people disturbed her nap), and once she was out again, they got her in the back of their truck. One of the rangers said she had some cubs up on top of the ridge behind us, and they were taking her back to her cubs.

I guess Mamma went to town, got blasted on drugs, and had the cops bring her home. At least in the eyes of the cubs. Magnificent animal though.

We get the occasional bear here, but usually only during severe drought. For the most part, they prefer not to mingle with upright walkers. Unless they get a taste for human food...then you can't get rid of them.

You should have called in sick "I can't bear to go to work today" :)

Hi Moongalaxy. Like your handle. Would have suited some of my hippy friends in the 60's:)
