The race also featured 16 lead changes — the former record for this event was nine. Six of those 16 lead changes Saturday were green-flag passes on the track and not related to a driver pitting under green.

“Overall, certainly pleased with what we saw on the racetrack from an eye test,’’ said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. “Definitely passing. When you look at metrics, it’s most leaders we’ve had, most lead changes, closest finish.’’

So what’s next?

“Part of our evaluation now will be can we do this in the future?’’ O’Donnell said. “Should we? And are there other racetracks with a similar layout that we may be able to use this at. That’s all future, potential but it is something you can look at for a couple of tracks as well.’’

No doubt the race had a few moments of several wide instances. But as a whole, I cant see
that NASCAR is satisfied with the total product. Were they expecting pack racing, maybe not the
whole field but at least the top 10 or 12 2x2 for several laps at a time. This reminds me of the new aero
pkg when it was first revealed at Atl. last year. A couple loose cars, but all in all , a nothingburger.

I give credit to NASCAR for trying.

(Well after seeing Steve O'Donnells comments, I guess Nascar is happy with the results.)

We'll see if it pays off at the gate for them.

Kyle Busch is quickly becoming a running joke. Almost meme worthy at this point.

You're not going to remember this guy as a champion and one of the greats. If he keeps his clown behavior he'll just be one of those drivers that ran.

Not so sure about that as I think he has a lot of good years ahead of him...HOWEVER. I wish he would shut his trap sometimes.

What he is getting at is the plates combined with how the air ducts dump air out of the wheel well gives the trailing car an advantage. Its not productive to pass if you cannot pull away. The package is counterintuitive to racing.

Kyle is right, IMO.

When NASCAR has to **** with the cars to slow em up so they stay bunched up that's not racing.

That's some "we are in the entertainment business so it has to be exciting "

That's like college basketball saying once your up by 20 points you lose a player and it's 4 on 5 for 10 minutes

The alternative is a snooze fest. At least they are trying.

He finished 12th? I was hoping he'd bounce off the wall and get a DNF. He's such a Richard cranium when he doesn't win, IMHO he's a big whiner

I guess this is now a fake track as well.
I dunno about 'fake', but it ain't racing when the fastest car can't pull away from the rest of the field. It was better than previous Indy X races, but to me it had some of the same characteristics that I already dislike about the other plate races.

I started watching the race on YouTube and it didn't work for me so I did some reading instead. The lack of fans had to be very embarrassing for Nascar and the track and going through all the hoops trying to get decent racing is so unnecessary when there is a perfectly good track 20 minutes to the west.

It also didn’t sit well with Kyle Busch, who was feeling salty after seeing his chance at a fifth straight Brickyard win disappear.

Busch told me the package was no good and said he would “definitely” be opposed to seeing it tried in the Cup Series.

“They wanted to slow down the fastest guy here so the rest of the field could keep up, and they did,” he said.

But what if there were some tweaks made that perhaps allowed for more passing? Would he be open to the idea then?

“There’s great ideas everywhere,” he responded while walking away.

I noticed that too. The attendance was dismal.

This pic from a friend who was there. Lots of leg room! Nice in the shade too.

yeah I noticed most of the fans that were there were able to find some shade, it was a hot one.
