The more I think about it, the more I think it is absurd. There was no need to switch back from wing to spoiler. In fact, the new spoiler looks absurd on the CoT. Absurd might not even cover it, it looks ridiculous and awful.

This will not derail cars from going airborne.

And the reason that I keep hearing that "there is no street car that features a wing!" is laughable. Every "spoiler" currently on American automobiles looks more like the CoT wing than the spoiler. There is no street car in the world that has anything that looks like a racing spoiler. None that are even close.

This is NASCAR bowing down to stubborn fans who refuse to accept change.

At least with the spoiler when the gets turned around and the roof flaps open the car sits back down instead of going over.

There were meetings and conversations with the drivers as well as extensive wind tunnel testing that led NASCAR to the wing/spoiler change.
IMO, I believe that the lift created by the wing pretty much cancels out the effectivness of the roof flaps.

Yeah they look like race cars again not wanna be street cars anymore.

And all this time I thought the idea of NASCAR was to race "stock" cars. So far the drivers claim that they can't feel the difference, so it looks to me like they did it to be able to say that they are "listening to the fans".

i'm waiting to see how the cars react when they get turned backwards at high speed. the difference, if any, will be shown then.

I don't know that there would be any difference over the old spoiler. Cars becoming airborne was nothing new when the wing came along. It happened in the past with the spoiler. It'll happen again with the spoiler.

It's already been explained quite well IMO that the wing did not create the resistance to slow the car down from it's high speed like the spoiler does when the car gets turned around. I'm sure all of the aerodynamic engineers that frequent this board will disagree.

I think the car looks stupid as all hell with spoiler but if it makes for better racing then I don't care. I don't know it will make a big difference or not but I like to think nascar is trying to improve the product. I don't believe we will see a difference until the next 1.5 track.

Yup. I agree, the cars look pathetic. It's too boxy, and square looking.
hope they drive better than they look.

If NASCAR is truly listening they need to get rid of the cow catcher on the front of the car. I am sick of tires getting cut down by that dang thing...

The open wheelers can go 500 miles without cutting a tire down, because they know the consequences of contact. Maybe the cup guys will figure it out.

But it is only the outside three or four inches doing the damage.Would it make that much of an aero difference to round it off a little narrower?

This isn't IndyCar racing, this isn't the IndyCar Series. Fans like NASCAR being a contact sport.

Thanks for clarifying that, Einstein.
I'm certain a few guys enjoy being able to cut someones tire down. As a matter of fact i've seen drivers intentionally try to do that with the front lip. They use it as a weapon.
Even before the COT, drivers were trying to cut tires down.
It was awhile ago, but the incident that sticks out in my mind is
Loudon, back in Nov 01. R.Gordon punted J.Gordon going for the win. Jeffy got P.O'd on the caution lap and went after Robbies left rear with a vengeance, to no avail.

yes, yes, yes no more fugly ricer wing, next kill the splitter. I heard somewhere (don't remember who said it) that nascar in a few years will have the fronts looking more like the ARCA cars, so I guess they are already thinking of killing the splitter.

You drive a Honda ricer-burner, don't you?

If you are going to make a silly comment, point me to one modern street car that features anything that looks like the spoiler on a Sprint Cup or Nationwide car. You wont be able to do it.

I think they look great! Like actual race cars again, now if we could just dump the spliter.

I agree with that except the splitter should be modified, but not dumped.

I think the change had a lot to do with the NNS COT coming.

What do you think they going to do when people like the NNS COT cars more because they they look more like production cars than the Sprint Cup cars?
