Brad Keselowski shopping for Army tank, hopes Dale Earnhardt Jr. will buy one too
Brad Keselowski apparently isn't looking to buy a lavish new car with his new-found wealth after winning the Sprint Cup championship.
Instead, Keselowski wants to buy an Army tank.
"I haven't found the person I want to buy it from," Keselowski said Tuesday. "But I want to get something from World War II to Korea area, something (from) the '40s to mid-'50s, era."
He should be able to afford it. Last year, Tony Stewart received $6.1 million in winnings and special awards just for capturing the Sprint Cup title.
Keselowski already has won $6.2 million in purse money this year, so he and his Penske Racing team likely will top $12 million in overall winnings. Drivers typically get 40 to 50 percent of purse money on top of their salary and bonuses.
According to MilitaryTrader.com, an iconic M4 Sherman tank could sell for as much as $300,000. A more rare M5 Stuart light tank could go for $250,000, according to Pennsylvania-based Berwick Historical Society, which is trying to purchase one. Some Stuart versions were built in Berwick.
"I've been looking into that really all summer long," Keselowski said. "It all started with (former driver) Wally Dallenbach who was telling me a story about having one. I thought, 'Wow, that would be awesome.' "
Keselowski, 28, wants good friend and NASCAR most popular driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. to get one, too.
"I thought it would be cool if we both got a tank and chased each other around in the woods with them," Keselowski said. "It's kind of our deal. I promised myself if I won it, I would buy one whether Dale does or not.
"It was kind of a little bit of motivation, I should say. I'm not one to really buy trophies for myself, but I think a tank would be pretty cool.
"I want to put one together and have some fun with it. When I'm done playing with it, I'll just park it in the driveway and scare off people who aren't supposed to be around."
