PrintEmail ShareBrad Keselowski enjoyed his weekend at Kentucky Speedway with a win in the Nationwide Series and a seventh-place finish in the inaugural Quaker State 400 Sprint Cup Series event.

The defending Nationwide Series champ kicked off his weekend on a high note by taking the checkered flag in Friday’s Feed the Children 300 - establishing a track record for winning average speed in the process.

Keselowski was able to stretch his final fuel load while staying ahead of a hard-charging Kevin Harvick to score his first win of the season and bring Dodge back to Victory Lane in the series for the first time in 21 races.

"I felt like we were pretty good (on) the very first run," said Keselowski, who led a race-high 132 laps. "You never know when you have a race-winning car, especially when it transfers from day into night. I certainly felt more comfortable once I got clean air, and I said something to [crew chief] Todd [Gordon] about it.

"You get that clean air and these cars are just phenomenal to drive, and mine was no exception. It was really, really fast."

Keselowski was also fast Saturday night when he took the green flag in the Quaker State 400. He started sixth in the Miller Lite Dodge and quickly worked his way toward the front. Keselowski muscled his way into the top spot on lap 142 and led a total of 79 circuits before getting shuffled back in a flurry of late-race pit stops and the final two-lap shootout that determined the outcome.

But overall, Keselowski was proud of the effort.

"I led a bunch of laps and I have to thank my team for that,” he said. “Everyone at Penske Racing has a lot to be proud of. I would have liked to have gotten a better finish from where we ended up. At the end, the restarts are just a crapshoot.

“If you get the bottom lane, you're going backwards. I kept getting in an odd position and just kept getting on the bottom lane. Every restart just kept playing against us. (It was) a great effort by this race team and that makes me proud."

Keselowski continued his climb up the Sprint Cup Series point standings and now sits 21st as the circuit heads to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for Sunday's LENOX Industrial Tools 301.

With one win to his credit, Keselowski needs to be inside the first twenty in the standings in order to qualify for a "Chase" spot as a Wild-card entry. He believes that is a goal his team is very capable of accomplishing and in fact, feels additional trips to Victory Lane are possible before the post-season cut-off rolls around in September.

"You will see bigger gambles is the best way to put it, and there will be bigger risk taking," Keselowski said of the strategies teams will more than likely try as the regular season winds down. "You play the odds. If there is a 20 percent chance that you will make it on fuel and an 80 percent chance that you won’t, you will take the 80 percent. But when you are desperate, you take the odds that aren’t in your favor and that’s when the sport is going to be more exciting for the fans.

"It's created another element that’s good for the sport and I’m glad that I could capitalize on it."

Keselowski is enthused by the entire Penske Racing organization's surge of success and looks forward to keeping the momentum going into the second half of the season.

“We have had fast cars," Keselowski said. "It always comes down to people and the decisions we make. When you have fast cars, you can dictate your fate, and that makes everybody look good and feel good."

The Dodge motors are very strong and the kid sounded very confident. He could be a sleeper.

Dosent he have to get in the Top 20 before he can get in as a WildCard!

Brad is strating to be more agressive, which is what he needs to do even more. He let Kenseth and his teammate Kurt cost him a chance at the win last Sunday, along with a few spots. If he had dove under Kurt on that last restart when Kurt fell back 3 car lengths, Newman and Edwards wouldn't have gotten by him. It's that kind of hesitation that cost him the win at Charolette when Denny backed way off Jr to save gas, but Brad never dropped down under Kahne. When Kahne failed to move up when he gassed out, Brad had nowhere to go. The old Brad would have knocked Kahne out of the way and gone on to win the race. He would have had 2 wins and been well into the top 10 right now.

Brad needs to ignore guys like Stewart crying when he went 3 wide on the high side to pass both Busch and Tony. Brad gave Tony plenty of room, but the giant tomato was all tears when he couldn't control his car.

Kez is only 3 Points out of 20th!! He Already Won this year......It's ON!!

There is already someone ahead of him with a win..So Kez HAS to win another race regardless. David Ragan is in 15th with a win

That isn't correct. There are 2 wildcard spots. Depending on how things shuffle out with the other race winners, both wildcards can be had by drivers with just 1 win.

I stand corrected..I forgot that there Are 2 spots for the wildcard..Thanks for the reminder;)

Only problem for Kez -- Tony's without a win and needing a wildcard and Montoya is destined to win Indianapolis.

I'm glad Kezlowski has 1 Win and is 21st in points but with 8 races till the chase and Stewart, Bowyer, Montoya, Biffle,Menard, Kahn, Allmendinger, Martin and Logano already ahead of him and only needing a win to get the spot......Good Luck!

But you have to be in top 20 in points

yep, he has to run really, really well and gain points if he doesn't win again. Kasey Kahne driving like a mindless Zombie at the end of the Charolette race could very well be the deciding factor for Kez. If Kasey had moved out of the lane when he gassed out, like he is supposed to, Brad has 2 wins and is just 3 points out of the chase.

Whjen nascar announced the WC's, I predicted some very rough driving between up and comers wanting to get in and veterans of the chase who are on the outside right now. It's very possible that one of these veterans knocks one of the WC hopefuls off a win so he can get in. I believe that Tony's "block me and i'll dump you" rule is designed for just that scenario. If I was a driver and heard Tony say that, I would make the first move when he blocks me.

I just read that Keselowski has scored more points in the past 9 races than all but 8 drivers. He's running better than I realized. Now he just has to dodge Juan for the rest of the season.

Go Dodge Go!!:beerbang:

Go HOME Dodge Go HOME! lol j/k

Brad actually has a good shot at it if he keeps making ground up the way he has. However, I can't imagine that Smoke aint gonna go all out to try to get one of these next 8 and slide in the chase.

Brads lap held up better than I thought it would. The later drivers never got much of an advantage from the cooler track.

Don't know butt if Jr continues his sliiide outta the Top Ten Kezlowski might still have a Chance at the Chase ;)

Well, that was painful. The boy has to learn to stop abusing right fronts. He finally beat Kyle, who seems to be a bit better at abusing those tires.
