MADISON, Ill. - Kertus Davis has been released from his contract with Kevin Harvick Inc. and is free to pursue other rides, Davis confirmed Friday at Gateway International Raceway.

Davis was splitting time in KHI's No. 77 Chevrolet this season but was removed from the car for the race at Milwaukee last month and for this weekend's Gateway 250. He was released from his contract last week, Davis said.

Ron Hornaday took Davis' place at Milwaukee and is in the car at Gateway. "I'm out shaking the trees, seeing what might come up," Davis said. "Who knows? Next week's Indy. Some of those [Nextel Cup] guys are going back and forth [between Indianapolis Motor Speedway and O'Reilly Raceway Park], so maybe I can help someone out."

Davis said he was thankful for the opportunity at KHI and refused to blame anyone in particular for his struggles. In five Busch starts this season, Davis' best result was a pair of 30th-place finishes.

"It just wasn't the right situation for me or the right situation for Kevin and DeLana Harvick," Davis said. "They are unique people, a first-class operation and a great, great sponsor in Dollar General. ... Everything just didn't work out."

Davis said there were "no hard feelings on my behalf."

Davis said he has moved back to South Carolina and has started working with his father's team again, DDL Motorsports. There are no plans, however, for Kertus to drive a car for his dad, Johnny.
