1-40 Construction In Knoxville Begins In May, Signs Already Going Up

Wednesday, March 12, 2008
by Bobby Rader News Director

The downtown Knoxville portion of Interstate 40 will close in May, and
already signs are being posted notifying motorists of the plans.
Interstate 640 will become the main roadway for interstate traffic during the construction period, scheduled from May 1st of this year until June 30th, 2009.

this is going to be a cluster f*** knoxville rush hour starts about 0200 and ends about 1900 it's bad enough now but with ALL traffic routing through 640 will be a nightmare

Yeah, tell me about it. It is my normal route of travel for most events in the west.

Guess I will have to go through late at night or early in the morning.

I-40 in Knoxville is a cluster even at 2PM. This is going to be a nightmare in the near future.

I have to go down as far a papermill onto Weisgarber Road.
Getting to Childrens Hospital off 17th is the way I was use to going.

Naw, you guys are pikers.

The Gulf Freeway in Texas --- from Houston to Galveston. Here in Texas it's called job security --- they start at one end, get to the other end, then come back and start over. It was built in the early 60s and isn't finished, YET !

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - When a section of Interstate 40 at downtown Knoxville closes beginning this summer, it will mean a change of plans for thousands of motorists on the major cross-country corridor.
The closure between James White Parkway and Hall of Fame Drive begins May 1 and is supposed to be done by June 2009.
The detour will carry motorists on I-640 around the city, which means signs are being posted in advance miles away on I-40, 75, and 81.
The construction will widen downtown I-40 to six through lanes and four auxiliary lanes. Nine bridges, 14 retaining walls, three noise walls and seven ramps will be built. A dozen side roads will be completed and two bridges will be demolished
