Kurt Busch at Homestead

I was reading that column those yammering idiots at NASCAR.com peck out on their keyboards once a week and they mentioned something that made me think. Homestead, under this new configuration, has been raced once by the Nextel Cup Series. I looked back and found that Kurt Busch was in some kind of wreck early on and started wondering what had happened...mulit car? Single car? Tire failure? What happened. Who was good at homestead last year, and if they finished that race the same way this year, how would the championship standings look? I know Kurt wasn't a title contender at the last race last year, but I remember it was the race that put him out of the top ten...anyone know what happened.

Here's a link to last years results....

The 5 guys competed for the title this years finished...

3) Jimmie Johnson
5) Jeff Gordon
24) Dale Earnhardt Jr
33) Mark Martin
36) Kurt Busch

If it goes down that way this year
Kurt Bush finishes with 6401, 6406, or 6411 (depending on bonus points)
Jimmie Johnson finishes with 6493, 6498, or 6503
Jeff Gordon finishes with 6480, 6485, or 6490
Dale Earnhardt Jr finishes with 6365, 6370, or 6375
Mark Martin finishes with 6328, 6333, or 6338

So Johnson wins the title....

Not sure what happened to Kurt in the race last year. He is listed as running at the finish as I assume it wasn't a engine issue.
Dale Earnhardt Jr finished 2 laps down
Mark Martin was involved in a crash and DNF.

Here's Kurt's official race recap from the race last year.....

From Roush Racing

Homestead, FL (November 16, 2003) – Kurt Busch and the Rubbermaid race team came to the newly-configured Homestead-Miami Speedway looking to repeat their 2002 success and secure a spot in the top-ten in the final Winston Cup point standings. Unfortunately an accident on lap four involving the No. 29 and No. 12 would prevent either from happening.

“I was running three wide and the cars came up into me,” Busch explained. “There are a lot of things you do at a brand-new track at the beginning of a race just to try to get going. We really wanted to finish in the top ten in points and we didn’t get that this year.”

Busch finished 36th while Bobby Labonte drove the No. 18 Chevrolet Monte Carlo to his second win of the year.

On Friday afternoon, Busch qualified 7th with a lap time of 30.060 seconds as the fastest Ford Taurus in the field.

“It’s the last race of the year and we were kind of going for the pole that’s eluded us all year.” Busch said “I think we took one provisional this year, so it was a good year for qualifying overall.”

The No. 97 brushed the turn four wall in practice on Saturday morning, but did not sustain any significant damage. Busch ended up 20th in Happy Hour but remained the third fastest Ford despite the contact.

Busch moved up quickly from his seventh starting position on Sunday afternoon when the green flag dropped, gaining three spots on the first lap. On lap four he was continuing his charge to the front while running in the high groove in turn one with Ryan Newman on the low side. Kevin Harvick went inside of the two cars and lost control of his No. 29 Chevrolet, sending the No. 12 into Busch and Busch into the turn two wall with serious damage.

At first it looked as if the No. 97 would be forced to retire for the day. The Rubbermaid team worked quickly to return the car to the track in an effort to pick up as many points as possible in a tight points battle with Terry Labonte for tenth in the Winston Cup point standings.

Busch returned to the track on lap 122 after significant repairs. When the checkered flag fell after lap 267, Busch crossed the line 36th. Labonte finished 15th to move past Busch by a mere 12 points in the final point standings.

Roush Racing teammates Jeff Burton finished 14th, Mark Martin 33rd, Greg Biffle 35th and 2003 Winston Cup Champion Matt Kenseth 43rd after losing a motor.

“It’s a real bummer” said Busch of finishing eleventh in the final standings. “I really commend the group that works with me all year with this Rubbermaid team, but we just never had any luck out there today.”

Kurt qualified 7th for that race. I'd say he runs the track OK enough.

Gettin' nervous yet?

I remember what happened now. If I recall, it looked highly suspicious, but after replays it was an obvious accident. Just one of those racin' deals I guess.

Gettin' nervous? Naw, not yet, but i think it'd be cool for Kurt to win just to hear everyone bitch and moan about it for a year.

I m thinking Jimmie Johnson will win the title even though i would like to see mark martin win it but i guess i mgonna get a cooler and watch it all play out
