When they did the Sprint 60 thing I was very suprised that Kyle nearly beat Dale Jr in popularity. He was even ahead of drivers like Jeff Gordon and Danica Patrick, both of which I assumed would get second and third. Who knew? ;)

I'm not really surprised, even on here he is the most popular driver. It doesn't matter if you like him or hate him he probably has more threads and his name is mentioned more often then any other driver in Nascar.

I am not argueing that he is well known, but the people were voting for their favorite driver, not the most well known.

We'll see where those fans are when he doesn't win 15-20 races in the minor leagues one year. Seemed his fanbase was totally non-existent last year.

Same place I was when Rusty quit winning. Still out there cheering him on week in and week out. :)

How much credence can you really give that little animated track diagram that they threw up on the screen? A quick glance at some of the drivers twitter accounts shows that there are many more followers of other drivers. Take it for what it's worth. It was nothing more than a disguised commercial for the series sponsor that meant nothing as far as measuring popularity.

I thought it was real when it was happening, but the more I think about it, it's probably fake (the little track diagram at least). #48 would probably have more fans than the #18. Besides, having the #18 run close in second behind the #88 is a perfect way to drum up more votes because the #88 faithful would feel compelled to vote more, lest the series villain beats Dale Jr.

That stupid fan vote thing is totally skewed to fans who have twitter and were savvy enough to pull it out in time for the vote. A one minute voting poll on one social networking site shows who the most popular drivers are? Gimme a break. They should do it that way for the next presidential election

You only have to look at a drivers merchandise sales to see how popular they are.

March sales tend to be a pretty strong indicator of popularity.

So, when breathoflife found that page on the NASCAR website selling heavily discounted unsold #20 Joey Logano Home Depot stuff, what does that mean?

The more people hate your favorite ____________, the more incentive you have to defend it. NASCAR drivers included. It's really just that simple. Kyle fans have more passionate reasons to tweet bomb that stupid contest than Danica fans, or any other fans. Kyle fans have more reasons to be on the defensive.

And for the record, I don't entirely agree with sales = popularity. In many cases, but not in all. Kyle does really well in sales. Some of it because people love Kyle, but some of it because kids love things with the little M&M's guys on it. Here's a fun exercise - stand around Kyle's merchandising trailer next time you're at a track. It won't take more than 10 minutes for you to hear a kid walk by and want something, and then a parent say "but that's Kyle Busch!" 15 minutes, tops. It's a lot of fun to watch.

I have been to a lot races and every time I walk by a kybu merchandise trailer if anyone is buying anything It is usually for a kid who likes candy and could care less about the driver.
