Labonte to the #41 ride? UPDATE: A possible scenario that could play out if this deal [Petty-GEM merger] goes through would place Reed Sorensen, who signed with GEM in August, in the #43. AJ Allmendinger, who parted ways with Red Bull Racing after the Kansas Speedway race in September and drove the #10 GEM Dodge for the final five races of the season, would remain in that ride according to sources. Bobby Labonte, who signed a four-year extension with the new BV regime and was given ownership as part of his benefit package. Now, it appears that Labonte could drive the #41 Target car for Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing.(FoxSports)(12-6-2008)
UPDATE: Adding another layer of intrigue to the [Ganassi-DEI merger] story are unconfirmed reports that Bobby Labonte may be negotiating to jump to DEI-Ganassi Racing, driving the #41 Target car. The deal would be contingent on Labonte's ability to negotiate an exit from Petty Enterprises, where he is signed through the 2012 season. A spokesman for DEI-Ganassi Racing said today that while he has heard Labonte’s name as one of many rumored to be in the running for the #41 car, he has no knowledge of any ongoing negotiations. A number of cards obviously remain to be dealt at this point. But at present, the most likely scenario appears to be for Labonte to negotiate his departure from Petty Enterprises, allowing him to move to DEI-Ganassi Racing with sponsorship from Target. That would keep Truex and his Bass Pro Shops sponsorship in-house, opening the door for AJ Allmendinger to drive the #43 Dodge next season for the newly merged Gillett-Evernham/Petty Enterprises tandem.(Sirius Speedway/Motorsports Soapbox)(12-9-2008) Comment here

Well, one more piece to th puzzle has been revealed now that Petty & Labonte have parted ways. It would be nice to see Labonte back in a Chevrolet.

The way this sport and Detroit are going, they all might be driving Toyotas, Hondas and Nissans in a few years. :p

I'd really hate to see what we have now out of NASCAR, but let's get real. All of the cars are virtually the same with just different decals. Yeah, there are differences in the nose, but for all practical purposes, that's it. Other than a nose template, there are few other different templates. When it comes to racing, I've never really paid attention to the make of the car anyway. What I want is to see great competition and in the Cup series, the roar of those V8's.

Your right. When Robbie Gordon Switched to Dodge earlier this year, they just stuck a Dodge motor in there, and Changed the nose and the tail, and Bingo, it was a Dodge. Toyota doesn't even make a Push-Rod engine, ,,,all of their engines are Dual over head cam engines. They petitioned NASCAR to let them use that design, but NASCAR said no.
But back on subject....I hope that Labonte drives for Ganassi/DEI. If he does, you watch and see,,,,that's gonna be a kick ass team.
When you get him, and Montoya, and Truex, into some Chevy power, along with the help of the Ganassi engine shop, and they are gonna be tough to beat. And then maybe next year, there will be a positive to hang your hat on, with all the negative we've seen.

After reading the following from Jayski I'm a bit confused......doesnt the 41 already have full sponsorship?.......so whats this about the sponsor that Bobby wants to bring...blah, blah

UPDATE 2: Sirius Speedway reported earlier this week that veteran Bobby Labonte will drive the #41 next season, and he remains the leading candidate for the ride. However, a sponsor Labonte hopes to bring to the team has not yet come through, putting the partnership – at least temporarily -- on hold
