Terry Labonte has used 10 provs this year.
Kenny Wallace has used 11.
Eliott Sadler has used 11.

Anybody know what DW's record is for one year?

Those provisionals aren't just your regular provisionals, they're Darrell Waltrip provisionals.

Terry will need "D-dub provs" at the rate he's going....he'll get em too

I was able to find this but this is just the Past Champ provisionals that he used in 2000. There may have been more.

"Waltrip retired from competitive driving following the 2000 Winston Cup season. The close of his career was a matter of frustration, as he used seven past champion's provisionals -- including four in the first five races of the season. In his last start he used one and finished 34th in the NAPA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway."

Anyway the man was a three time Champion and had/has a fierce love for racing, so I'm glad he used em, and wouldnt have minded seeing him use one for every dang race! Terry is equally as deserving in my opinion! Now as for Elliott, if he does that crap in a Yates car, I hope they send him packing! I know DJ and Ricky both have had to use far too many in my opinion but I know that their team concentrates far more on race setup than qualifying.

Terry should quit before he fades like DW did at the end of his career.

DW used many provisionals at the end of his career, but like Kel said, he pretty much earned them.

Also the "Past Champions Provisional" was not created for DW. Goes back a wee bit further than that.

Provisionals Used by DW:

Seems the most was in 1998 when he spend time in three different rides. The #17, thr #1, and the #35. That year he used 21 provisionals.

The last full year he ran the #17 was 1997 and he used 9 provisionals that year.

In both 1999 and 2000 DW used 8 provisionals each year.

That's what I come up with anyway.

151 and some change just did not cut it today :)

He'll be up there come the closing laps, Rockingham is good to him usually and he knows how to treat her right also! Actually I wouldn't mind seeing DJ start farther back more often, I love to see him make his way up especially in the closing laps! Also his finishes this year seem to have been better with that extra incentive! Maybe he is one of those types that works better under pressure!

Kel

He'll be strong on Sunday. He was running away with the spring race until he blew up.

Man, dont jinx him....I almost had that out of my mind! :) I'm still pushing hard for that top 5 in points, he's gonna have to be stellar!!

Kel

I wouldn't hold your breath for a top 5 (in points) but he'll be in the top 10. At least he's not 17th!

From Jay's 1999 Provisonal page...

"Going into effect with the 1999 edition of the Daytona 500, the former champions provisional will be awarded in a manner that is similar to regular car owners provisionals. That is to say that each team with the current or former champion in the car will be issued four provisionals when they attempt to qualify for the Daytona 500. Then, with every eighth qualifying attempt, the team with the current or former champion will be awarded one additional champion’s provisional. This would limit a team to a total of eight former champion’s provisionals....."

In checking the stats there I found that DW only used 4 Champ Provs in 99. In 2000, 7 of the 8 provs he used were Champs.

When is the last time Mark had to use a Mulligan?I would say he is the best of the vets right now. What we all have trouble dealing with is the fact that a new generation has arrived, and are here to stay.;)

I think that stat is off just a little. The only place I saw it at 10 was on Jayski's site and I could be wrong, but I don't think he has that updated from last year.

These are the provisionals (regular & past champs) I come up with for the Veterans so far this year (including today):

Bill Elliott - 1
Ricky Rudd - 2
Mark Martin - 3
Dale Jarrett - 6
Rusty Wallace - 6
Terry Labonte - 8

I don't really know what to think of the provisionals. I've seen in Busch, especially, cars that were 12 or 13 mph slower than the pole sitter make the field and someone only off by a mile or 2 not make it. They should probably just use them for big mechanical problems...but where do you draw the line on what would fall in that category.

My attitude is go fast or go home. 43 on time and that's it.

I am not in agreement with current provisional rules but will not go so far as to say all 43 spots should always be on time.

Provisonals are part of almost every racing series I know of. Be they called promoter option or track option or whatever. The reasons for their existence are sound and viable.

NASCAR has gone too far in the number that they use, IMHO. The change from 5 to 7 provisional spot some 4 or 5 years ago was unneeded. I can't remember the reasoning behind it. The rule of not charging a team in the top 25 for a prov is also off track, again IMHO. If you are going to limit the number of provisionals a team can use, limit it for all of them. At least NASCAR had the good sense to do this with the Past Champions provisional which at one time was unlimited.

Keep the the provisionals but drop back to somewhere between 3 and 5 spots. Limit the number available to any given team and make it stick for all the teams regardless of points status.

I'm with you, 71fan.

One of the more amazing stats in NASCAR is that Jeff Gordon has never used a provisional in his Cup career.

Yea, I know I'm a hard head about it. And yes, I would accept a more reasonable approach. I'm not above compromise.

the single most offensive part of the current system imnsho:) is the no charge rule. Half the field could line up on provs for all I care if they ALL got charged.

Hmmm. idea for a little stat work.

With no provs I wonder how the starting grids would have been affected this year.

For this Rock race anyway the DNQs would be

• Fukuyama
• T Labonte
• Hornaday
• Long
• Park

If we went strictly on time ...

Rockingham (3 DNQs) - DNQ's would have been Stricklin, Renfrow and Long. Trickle would have made it, replacing Stricklin in the lineup.

Las Vegas (1 DNQ) - Cope would be in. Hamilton would be out.

Atlanta (2 DNQ) - Hornaday in, Rudd out.

Darlington (0 DNQ)

Bristol (0 DNQ)

Texas (1 DNQ) - Hornaday in, Brett Bodine out.

Martinsville (1 DNQ) - Renfrow in, Hillenburg out.

Talladega (4 DNQ) - Shawna Robinson and Rick Mast in, Skinner and Elliott Sadler out

California (3 DNQ) - Gaughan, Little and Hermie Sadler in. Mast, Robinson and Bill Elliott out.

Richmond (1 DNQ) - Grubb in, Kimmel out.

Charlotte (4 DNQ) - Chad Little in, Brett Bodine out.

Dover (3 DNQ) - Cope in, Andretti out.

Pocono (0 DNQ)

Michigan (0 DNQ)

Sears Point (2 DNQ) - Elliott Sadler and Park out, Ash and Compton in.

Daytona (2 DNQ) - Berrier in, Jeff Green out.

Chicago (4 DNQ) - Hornaday, Shelmerdine and Raines in, Hamilton, Atwood and Grissom out.

New Hampshire (0 DNQ)

Pocono (1 DNQ) - Long in, Shelmerdine out.

Indianapolis (7 DNQ) - Hornaday, Cope and Wimmer in. Busch, Brett Bodine, and Mike Wallace out.

Watkins Glen (4 DNQ) - Cameron in, Benson out.

Michigan (1 DNQ) - Biffle in, Mike Wallace out.

Bristol (4 DNQ) - H Sadler and Long in. Schrader and Hooper out.

Darlington - No qualifying, rain

Richmond (1 DNQ) - Long in, H Sadler out.

New Hampshire (1 DNQ) - Long in, Park out.

Dover (3 DNQ) - Wimmer and Brett Bodine in, Terry Labonte and Tim Sauter out.

Kansas (3 DNQ) - Brett Bodine and Shelmerdine in, Kirby and Shepherd out.

Talladega - No qualifying, rain.

Charlotte - No qualifying, rain.

Martinsville (5 DNQ) - Rose and Long in, Geoff Bodine and Grissom out.

Atlanta - No qualifying, rain.

<HR>

Every race that had DNQs would have had a different lineup.

Some big names would have been left out in a few races (Terry Labonte, Busch, Rudd, Bill Elliott and Park to name a few).

Carl Long got the shaft a number of times - would've made it in if not for slower cars using provisionals.

Bill qualified 35th for this race. The only race (so far) this year he had to use a provisional was the early 'Dega race. ;)

This is the line from NOL. His time is the slowest of the field.

Not according to my records. Bill started 39th on a prov. Was the slowest of all cars in qualfying laps. Some 6 MPH off the slowest time in.

Sorry Rock, didn't see your reply.

Bill has a little problem on his run.

BILL ELLIOTT (No. 9 Dodge Dealers Dodge Intrepid R/T) “The tire got into the fender in turn one and grinded the left front tire. I got sideways and that was it. There was no need to run another lap after that. It was over.”

Sorry guys. I think I'm gonna have to change my source, decadesofracing. net! :) It's a really good site for stats if anyone wants to check it out, but obviously, if you're correct, it has some discrepancies.
