Some short takes from the NASCAR Nextel Media Tour:

Bruton Smith said one reason he hopes NASCAR will move its Nextel Cup banquet from New York to Las Vegas is because “people are tired of being ripped off” in the Big Apple. “This year six of us went out to dinner and when I looked at the check I thought they’d written down their phone number,” Smith said.

Smith also said he and Bob Bahre, who each own half-interest in North Wilkesboro Speedway, have signed a deal with a real estate company to negotiate a sale of the land on which the defunct track now sits

Some of the best racing in NASCAR has occurred at North Wilkesboro.

In the event a sale takes place, what will the new owner(s) do ??? Tear up the facility and develop the land or maintain it as a racing facility.

If a racing facility, for what type of racing?? North Wilkesboro has so many interesting characteristics it would be a shame it someone tried to modify it in any way other than possibly a new surface and even at that, it should conform to the existing one, turns, elevations and all.

At my age, attending NASCAR races is not my favorite thing any longer for a variety of reasons. I hate to drive much any more, and hate it even more to fight crowds and drunks, but this is one track I would tolerate the drunks and crowds to watch either a Craftsman Truck, BUSCH series or modified race.

Got lotsa personal memories of Wilkesboro that go back a long ways and nearly every one of them has an interesting story relating to the racing. :)

Whiz, while I agree with you on all accounts about this track, I don't think that a buyer, at 12 mil, can use the land for racing and still make a profit. Now I could be wrong, but I just don't see it happening without the top series coming on board. I also don't think that NASCAR would even give the track dates for either the truck series or the grand national series. That means that if racing were to continue there, it would be on a local basis and I can tell you that just won't work.

I too have some great memories from that track. One of the last times we were there, a friend of ours was drinking screwdrivers and had a milk jug already made full of the drink. Near the end of the race, he accidently spilled about half the jug onto a couple of boys in front of him. Amazingly, they didn't get made. They were from Ohio and said that they just enjoyed the whole experience. If that would only happen every time something like that happened. :)

I know this is off-topic but i just had to tell you about my story with orange juice.

My wife and I were on a red eye flight from Los Angeles to Washington, DC. Soon after we were in the air the flight attendants started serving. One of the attendants was standing beside me and she was shaking a big bottle of orange juice and the top came off. It all came cascading down over my head and shirt. To make matters worse, I was wearing a light blue terry cloth shirt.
