Paul, in Tennessee at least, you are justified in shooting an intruder for self defense. If you feel threatened, and there is reasonable evidence that you are in danger of death or serious bodily injury, you may take steps to defend yourself. In other words, drag the body inside, if need be. You'll still probably be investigated, maybe even prosecuted, but self defense is a viable mitigating factor.
As to attaining additional firearms, I dunno how well that would go over with IM28. She ain't wild about the shotgun, but understands its purpose. I suppose someone needs to say what we all already know: If you have a gun in your home, store it responsibly, know how to use it reponsibly, and by all means, keep it in a place where children will not be able to get at it.
