Why does NASCAR have drivers bust their butt to try for the pole (inside)
position, and then during the race give the preferred inside line to the
lapped cars? Seems if it's good enough at the start, the lead lap cars
should keep the inside line all the way through the event.
 
Good question, dd16. But, conversely, the outside gives you a better angle to get into the corner.

while it seems somewhat perverse, the reason the lapped cars line up to the inside is a natural progression.

During a race a slower car being overtaken is "expected" to move the inside to allow the leaders to pass. Should too many lapped cars line up to the outside ti would likely resutl in much confusion as some tried to move down out of the way.

There is some amount of chaos with the way it is run now, but all the drivers have become accustomed to it over the majority of their career.
