Lastcar

According to that site, JD McDuffie has one more last place finish than Nemechek (32 vs 31)

Somebodys gotta finish last in every race . Those guys may not have had big budgets but they weren't quitters either . They all loved racin.

Thats why I liked them, They loved it , it was there life. Most of all, they were the roots of Nascar. My Dad tells the story of The France Family asking these type teams to please come and compete(to fill out the field IMO). These guys or some like them, worked other jobs and gave a lot of nights and most weekends to the race. I know because Since I was old enough to remember I went to the races with them. Wow Just amazes me how far Nascar has come in my lifetime.

And in many ways it has left those racers behind , only the winners seem to count today . Sad todays fans don't understand what it was like back then. Some guy who finished three laps down sharing a beer and toasting the winner . Both hard nosed racers , equals . Cotton Owens buying tires for Wendell Scott.

Silly question but...was there always prize money for last place? In other words were there "start and parks" way back in the day? Or was the amount so small no one entered just to collect a cheque?

Of course there has always been last place money . And there have always been back markers (as they used to be called ) to collect it . Many great teams started that way until they attracted sponsors to pay the bills . Today 's new latte fans are so wrapped up in winning , they think only the top five should race . Start and parks have zero impact on the racing , once they get some funding , some become mid packers , but most will never go beyond that . Just old fat guy observations , no stats to back it up.:D

I do not remember start and parks, the team my dad helped ran as best they could and depending on where they finished they had enough money to eat, get home , and maybe pay themselves a small amount.

I remember a 13th place finish at Daytona was a big deal, real big. They all got payed extra that week. I think I got a new ball glove. LOL

Lastly Ted brings a good point about some have been left behind. Maybe thats a problem, Nascar has got above its raising, Outgrown its own roots or is too far away. Maybe that is a great Thread topic to keep us all busy this week.

Interesting stuff BamaFan, what team was your dad involved with? I wonder what kind of money a last place cheque would be in those days, wasn't 43rd at the 2013 Daytona 500 around like $175,000?

The driver was Roy Mayne(sp?) Team was owned by 2 brothers, Walt and Tom Hunter. The only thing my dad can remember is Roy was in the service at the time and was able to get away and drive for them on some weekends. I did find where they finished 5th at Daytona in 1966. Funny thing was the garage they worked out of is in Cashiers NC. and is about the size of a two car Garage or smaller. still standing today. All of the guys worked other jobs and raced on the weekends. Hope I answered your question.
