I'm perfectly aware that virtually none of you all have ever heard of her but I thought I needed to share this.
Former biathlete Laura Dahlmeier was found dead following a mountaineering accident in Pakistan at the age of 31.
Biathlon is a very niche sport in North America but in Germany world cup events are attended by tens of thousands of people and have a TV viewership of up to 5 million.
A two-time olympic champion (Korea 2018), seven time world champion and 2016-17 world cup champion, Laura was one of the best athletes of all time in her sport. All of these successes came before she retired at just 25 because she didn't like the spotlight and preferred to be in the mountains.
She was a star in Germany, better known than 95% of Bundesliga players. The President has eulogized her and our largest nationwide public TV station interrupted their programming earlier this evening to air a tribute to her.
She was an experienced climber and as a notable critic of the commercialization of mountaineering stated she never had any desire to climb Mount Everest.
She left a will saying that if she were to die in a mountaineering accident no one should risk their lives trying to recover her body. Laila Peak will therefore remain her grave.
RIP to a legend.
