During a modest round of layoffs Monday and Tuesday at Hendrick Motorsports, Jimmie Johnson’s spotter, Stevie Reeves, was told he would not return to the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet team next season, Reeves confirmed Tuesday night.

Reeves and the Hendrick organization part on good terms. The spotter, who helped guide Johnson to his second consecutive Sprint Cup championship in 2007, has already been contacted by other teams and is weighing his options.

“They wanted to give me plenty of time to find something before Homestead and not leave me hanging high and dry,” said Reeves, who will spot the final two races of the season for Johnson as he attempts to win a record-tying third straight championship. “Rick Hendrick knows how to treat people, and that’s what makes him so successful. Jimmie Johnson is a class act, and the only thing I regret is that I won’t be working with him next year, but I’m going to land on my feet OK.”

Johnson has won 16 races with Reeves as his spotter the past two seasons, and Johnson leads the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup by 106 points over Carl Edwards going into Sunday’s race at Phoenix.

I don't get it. Why would you layoff a spotter? I would think if he was not performing they's fire him not layoff. JJ has to have a spotter so why lay one off that is doing a good job.

On a side note, it is a sad state of affaris when one of the top temas in NASCAR starts laying off people!!!

I wondered why a spotter would get laid off. My guess is that's the only thing he did with the team and they're looking for someone that's already doing another job to also be the spotter.

Our government needs to do the same thing with all these government jobs.

I'm just guessing but if his sole job was that of spotter it can't be that much of a drain on finances in a multi-mil operation.

They employ ~550 people. This has flucuated 20 either side over the past year. So I guess the questions are, how many are being laid off and could this be a business correction rather than a sign of problems?

I'm sure rick is just trying to get the most production out of the fewest people at the "cheapest" possible.

could be a personality problem between him and johnson or that chad guy, nice way of getting rid of him so he could find employment with another team. my $$ says he wasn't layed off because hendrick is having $$ problems

Well I don't know. I mean his teams haven't done so well this year... ;)

There have been rumors that approx. 750 people may be let go in Nascar. Jr confirmed that he thinks those numbers are in the ball park. Things are very tough nowadays and will be even tougher due to the economy.
