LeBron James was ruled to have violated his amateur status by accepting two retro jerseys as a gift from a clerk at a local sporting goods store. The team will have to forfeit only the last game he played in because it was after the jersey incident. This just sucks. I'm not saying taking the jerseys was right, it was obviously a really poor decision on his part. But it seems a little harsh to punish he and his teammates this severely for it. As I have stated many times before, a whole lot of people are making a butt-load of money off of this kid. Nobody sees that as a problem, but he gets a couple free jerseys and it was like he commited murder or something. I really do feel bad for his teammates as they had a chance to be National High School Champions. They are rated #1 in the country right now by USA Today. He is appealing the ruling, but it doesn't look good.
The PROBLEM is, the fans, coaches, teachers, students, parents and anyone else you care to throw in the mix have let Lebron James think he can do what he wants, when he wants, and it will be excused. Time after time, athletes are unjustifiably given the idea from everyone else they are exempt from thier actions. Most recent case in point, see Tony Stewart. Who, by the way was smart enough to get the message the world is not his oyster.
Once the message is delivered, with some force and meaning, the ego deflation process begins.
Lebron James has never had a stabilizer or guiding force in his life. And he will now miss out on the championships in Ohio, but in the team effort, also screwed his teammates out of thier dreams by his lack of judgement. What is thier future ?? He will still go on to bigger and better things such as pro ball.
The big question will be, has he learned his lesson?? Will any good come of this?? Don't excuse him for bad judgement. Chastise him and let him know how many other people were involved by his inappropriate decision and rule violation. As Johnny Cochran might say, "he made the call now he don't play ball". And all for $842 in jerseys.
