Let The Rumors Fly

Which drivers will be where next season? There is plenty of talk even though there are 22 races to go in the 2005 season.
It seems to happen earlier and earlier each season and this year is no exception. Just past the 14th race of the season, driver changes are the hot topic in the Nextel Cup garage area.

Atop the list of available rides next season are the cars that will be vacated by retiring veterans Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace. The frontrunner for the No. 6 Roush Racing Ford driven by Martin appears to be Sterling Marlin. The writing is on the wall for Marlin at Ganassi Racing, as team owner Chip Ganassi is shaking up his program. Indications are that David Stremme will get the call to replace Marlin in the Coors Light Dodge with Lone Star Steakhouse coming on board as a second primary sponsor. Another rumor has Ricky Rudd filling the seat of Martin’s Ford with Marlin going to the Wood Brothers and Rudd’s No. 21 Ford.

Wallace’s No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge seat is still very much up in the air. Kevin Harvick held a press conference at Pocono to squelch rumors that he may move over to fill Rusty’s ride. That leaves Jamie McMurray as the hot name to fill the seat.

McMurray, however, has an option year left on his contract with Chip Ganassi in the No. 42 Texaco Havoline Dodge. Don’t expect to get an accurate read on this ride for some time to come.

Robert Yates also appears to be intent on adding a third team to his stable of drivers, which includes Elliott Sadler and Dale Jarrett. Sadler and sponsor M&M’s have just inked contract extensions that would have the two with Yates through the 2008 season. Candidates for Yates’ proposed third team included current MB2 driver Scott Riggs.

Other drivers who appear to be on the hotseat include Michael Waltrip at Dale Earnhardt, Inc., Jason Leffler at Joe Gibbs Racing and Brian Vickers at Hendrick Motorsports. Gibbs, however, is traditionally loyal, so Leffler may get another shot in ’06 and Vickers has picked up his efforts in recent weeks, which may help save his ride for next season.

I want to take this opportunity to announce that although my contract has not been renewed, but I'll be staying where I am. :)

LOL..........I heard that

mears to the 2 or 91, at least that's some spec on jayski, sorenson to the 41. Although I hear Gaughan to the 91. Stremme to the 40.

Mears to the #2...hmmmm, that sounds very plausible. Penske has a soft spot in his heart for the name Mears and I wouldn't doubt that he might give Casey a shot. Yeah, interesting indeed.

Mears is still a hot commodity, even if he isn't top tenning them to death. You have to really think, "how good of a car is the 41?" It seems entirely plausible that ol' Chip might be holding out on that car, waiting for Sorenson...look what happened with the 99. It isn't like Burton suddenly forgot how to drive, the cars were just crap. So, they must have started giving Carl some good gear once he got there. I think the same thing is going on with the 41, Chip wants Reed in that car, he wants a Rookie of the Year again, Mears can't and didn't give him that, so he may want to try again.

Interesting rumors ..... can't wait to see who goes where !!!

Haven't heard the one about Brian Vickers and I think Scott Riggs would be a excellent addition to Yates.

:)

As much as Gibbs is sticking by Jason Leffler, Hendrick is doing the same about Vickers. ;)

Axl, you have a good point there but as to the #99, I think there is also something there that Burton couldn't give and that is no fear racing. Carl has yet to have or be around some pretty bad crashes and so still has the guts that he can do anything. Carl probably takes that car closer to the edge than Jeff would or did. That is something that I believe all the drivers go through and once they have some years under their belt or a couple of really bad crashes, they begin to drive in a different way and not take so many chances. The vets call this driving with their heads. :)

If McMurray goes anywhere it could the Miller Lite car - cause isn't he the one dating Rusty's daugther?? Kind of keep it in the family!
LOL!

Difference is that at least Vickers has run up front and contended on more than one ocassion, Leffler never seems to get past the top 20 if he finsihes at all.

might be makin it up.....but im going to predict this...and probably way off

Ricky Rudd drives the #6 Tide Ford for Jack Roush next year.

Id love to see Ricky sportin the Tide gear once again!

I was once a Ricky Rudd fan, but that was way back when he was driving the #26 Quaker State car. Been a long time since then.
