Let's stir the pot a little..

Well, 99% of us on here are NASCAR fans, and have been for the longest time. Many here are NASCAR vets, and some others are new to it and its surroundings. Well, I must ask you all one simple question. Are you pleased with where NASCAR is? After the sponser switch, points adjustments, schedule fix, etc. I want sole opinions.. and mainly from the older fans of NASCAR. Since the mid 80's to the present, are you happy with what NASCAR has become?

I am looking forward to reading some of these.

I have followed the sport since 84. I like the new format, just wish they would tweak it a bit. (More points for winning.) I liked the old format, but was kinda tired of "looking to next year" if my driver didn't have a legitimate shot at the title during the last bunch of races.

The pain of older tracks losing dates to newer tracks could have been eased by making a couple of the newer venues short tracks.

I agree. NASCAR needs more short tracks than anything right now. Bristol, Martinsville, and Richmond aren't just enough, ya know? Give us about 3 more, and I'm sure ratings will sky rocket. Isn't that what they want anyways?

I have been following Nascar since the early 70s, i think it has come a long way for sure. I was dead against this new points system, but now that i see it in acton i kind of like it. It sure is more exciting. The biggest gripe i have with Nascar is their lack of consistency concerning rules infractions. The tv coverage could be a little better, seems NBC is always missing the replays. That is minor stuff though, the biggest problem is rules infractions and how they are implemented. It would be nice to see a few more short tracks on the schedule. A track like Richmond is the perfect short track size IMO.

I see little about the new face of NASCAR that I like. I know they are pandering to the new fans with the new schedules, tracks, points and even pushing out the older drivers in favor of the pretty boys. But, at some point the fickle fans that are there today may be gone tomorrow and will I still be there to buy those tickets and merchandise. Or, will I have thrown up my hands in disgust and disappointment and moved on to something else. I'm not saying I'm against change. Obviously something needed to be done with the scheduling. Rockingham just couldn't draw following Daytona like it did. But, slow gradual changes. Give us time to absorb one change before something else comes along. I shouldn't need a scorecard to recognize what I've been watching for years...

Oh, and common templates, give me a friggin break

I've been a fan since the late 70's. Overall, the changes have good for NASCAR's growth and popularity..........and that can't be bad. Change............any change in the rules, schedule, or presenting of the races has always been met with a bunch of controversy ever since I've been watching and paying attention! :) Switching to radial tires, requiring roof flaps, minimum hieght, the "Earnhardt Bar", firesuits, right side windows on the big tracks, green/white/checkered, and even racing back to the yellow flag have all stirred huge controversies. It seems every change generates talk of conspiracies, greed or pandering. But, it all goes away after a season or two........till the next change comes along!! :D Guess we fans are a fickle group.........we want safety, parity, excitement, "drama", short tracks, big tracks, road courses, cost containment, unlimited horsepower and any number of other things. But, most of all, we want controversy!!

I guess you can say, I've gone along with the changes and for the most part I believe the changes have been good. Some I'm not too fond of but I've learned to live with them. I've been impressed with the France's and NASCAR for some time now since they've generally done a fantastic job of growing the sport and putting on some great entertainment for 38 weeks out of the year!!

I was dead set against the new point system at first. I really still think it is an unfair system to the 11-15 place when it comes to getting into the top 10. But there is very little fair these days. So I will give the new my vote.

First I do not like the new points system. My driver just missed the top 10. As far as the racing I can't get enough! Something needs to be done about the restrictors at Talladega and Daytona to separate the field. Please no more 1 1/2 mile tracks and I would like to see a little more grinding at the finish line. NASCAR still has my vote for the best sport.

although I don't think anything will ever be done with the plates I agree 100% on no more 1 1/2 mile tracks.

Don't worry the day will come when there will be a mandatory caution with 10 to go

I've been watching racing since Richard Petty was still the man for the most part. While I am not real happy with a lot of the decisions NASCAR makes, it hasn't made me completely turn it off yet. I still enjoy the racing when the powers that be let them do so. The short tracks still get my blood pumping a little faster and I still get a huge thrill out of seeing one of my favorites win a race.

I hate plate "racing" with a passion generally reserved for liberals with big mouths. I don't have much use for tracks like Pocono or Michigan as there just isn't enough passing for my liking. I am left speechless by NASCAR's interpretations of their own "rules", especially when they most often seem to favor certain drivers. I also miss some the older tracks and traditions, but I understand the need for change in the bigger picture.

To sum it up...they tick me off more often than they used to, but I still watch a bunch of it. Not as much as I used to, but still a bunch. They have saved me a lot of money as I can't tell you how much I used to spend on race tickets and memorabilia when I was still hooked. I can't tell you the last time I bought any racing gear, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was over a year. That is very unusual for me, but it is what it has come to. They wanted newer fans in newer markets and they've got them. But, I am still a fan even if I feel like they don't care whether I am or not.

Im not sure if I should answer this question in a nice way or an honest way...

An honest way. That's the whole purpose of this thread.

Yeah that was tongue in cheek.
Nice way = not nice way.
Honest way = being downright brutal.

Seriously, it annoys me more than anything else now. When I was younger I used to watch it all the time, every Sunday like clockwork. But now, maybe cause Im older (22) and growing out of it, or just cause I have other stuff to do, I hardly watch it now. When I do its bits and pieces instead of straight through like I did before.

But nowadays its so dramatic, seriously over today's incident, deep down inside Helton is loving it. He has created drama, tension, anger, all which equals more viewership and more money. I mean the whole incident was like a main topic on Sportscenter, and it wasnt the race, just the incident. Last time Nascar was as close to a main topic on Sportscenter was for the July 4th race at Daytona.

Everything is too PC. Its like its scripted. Drivers cant act the way they want to because of fear. Drivers cant drive 100% because Helton is always watching. Even the aero stuff, its more about cars and less about drivers these days. Plate races suck. The 1.5 milers are basically who has the best car. Short tracks and road courses are where its at, but Nascar is after the money at the expense of good racing.

To me, its turning more and more into WWE every weekend.

i've been a fan since the 70's, and honestly i don't like nascar today, the drivers act like they are superheros, the fans are becoming more and more obnoxious, the ticket prices are way to high, the racing in average at best and nascar as a gov. body just plain sux....
at one time i didn't miss a race, usually attended between 9 and 13 races a year and watched the rest on the tube along with anything else related to nascar. this year i attended 2, now days i usually listen to it on the radio while i am working in the yard or something. I cannot stand the TV package, DW makes me embarrassed to be from the south and poor old benny can't seem to remember anything. This year is my last at attending races, i will keep my BMS tix but have already sold them for next year, i cannot continue to give nascar any of my $$$ they have shown they do not give a damn about the fans that made them what they are today so why should i......

Like some, I'm an old phart.

There are things I miss terribly --- North Wilkesboro being one of them. I don't like the crass commercialism that seems to have taken over the sport --- but then, it is a business --- and if a business doesn't make money, it doesn't stay in business.

I sometimes wish that the changes haven't come so fast. I abhor the "rules" that no one is quite sure of. I intensely loathe "common templates". And I won't even go into the deep-seated hatred of the restrictor plate.

But, when push comes to shove, on Sunday, I put aside my dislike and just get caught up in the men who sit in those machines and race.

Like NASCAR the way it is today ??? Not really.

I've been a fan since 1958 and been a part of the scene, directly and indirectly having worked in, on and around the sport in various capacities during that time.

I've seen ( and accepted) more changes than most and not as many as some.

NASCAR used to be FUN for the participants!!!! And fans.

It no longer has that characterization.

In considering the past and recalling regular complaints lodged against NASCAR for inconsistent penalties or manipulation of the rules, I would welcome the return if the pressure were gone from the game and the game were once again made to be FUN rather than a sponsor driven and controlled enterprise!!!!!!!

This is why it is understandable when DE7XWCC said he'll go work on his cabin in the mountains instead of watching, listening or attending a race. For me, it is no longer absolutely necessary, or fun, to watch every NASCAR race. This feeling has been present for the past several years and the disappointment increases every week as my enthusiasum lessens.

NASCAR has created excitement and instant gratification. Just as there is an appeal for people who play trivia games by searching a collection of record books rather than pulling them from memory. It takes the fun out of the game.

Just as the rule changes and artificial excitement created by NASCAR have taken the FUN out of the sport. At least for me.

Just my thoughts.

you are exactly right Whizzer and you found the word i was looking for "FUN" they truely have taken the fun out of it.
