Two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Al Unser Jr. will seek treatment for alcohol abuse and won't race for the next several weeks.

Unser revealed his plans Thursday, just hours after prosecutors said he would not face criminal charges on accusations that he hit his girlfriend and left her stranded along a highway.

Al Unser Jr. met the media Thursday at Indianapolis to announce he was entering himself into a substance-abuse rehabilitation center.

"I have a problem with alcohol abuse,'' he said. "Nearly ever poor choice that I have made in my life was under the influence of alcohol. I don't understand why I have a problem, but I know I have to straighten out.''

I for one wish him all the courage and strength in the world.:)

R-E-S-P-E-C-T for admitting in public, And PRAYERS to help him thru it.

BUT abusing a fellow human or animal needs more help cus it's just not only the booze.

he needs prayer and faith. he'll be fine with them. takes a man or at least a scared man to admit his issues. no dig intended.

I saw the end of that speech myself. I don't think I have ever had as much respect for him as I did at that moment. He took the first step, but as a former drunk myself (I was not an alcoholic because I didn't want to go to all of those meetings) I can tell you it is a long road. I heard a couple of years ago that Chris Mullen, the NBA player, has the same routine every day. He wakes up, puts his feet on the floor and says "I am not going to drink today". So far, it is working.

Several family members had problems with that. I know first hand what it can do to your life. I respect that he WANTS to get treatment. That's the first step in the right direction. I found my dad who passed away from alcohol toxication. Never wanted to touch the stuff after seeing what it can do to you.

It takes a real man to do that...I guess hes a real man.

well from what i hear from a IRL message board that has alot of IRL insiders from race teams and what not Little Al did not do it on his own Corteco(his sponcer) forced him to go in rehab, it was in his contract with Corteco and team Kelly bc they knew he had a problem and if he messed up he had to go into rehab.

But in any way that he is going i am glad he is going

wish him the best.

i just hope he's doing this because he recognizes the fact that he has a problem and not just because he got caught.

Hmm seems I recall that 71Fan has done some work on a vlunteer basis in rehabilitation programs for alcohol abuse. So mebbe he can offer some first hand insight here.

I would guess that many people enter these programs not entirely on their own motivation. Family, friends and business associates may often prod them into seeking help. the reason for their entering would seem important only by it's effect on the programs success.

Wish Al and everyone wrestling the demon the best in combatting any type of substance abuse.

Yer right Scrabble. Not once have I seen anyone who was "inspired" to go to rehab. In my experience it is always out of desperation.

Little Al got a wake up call so to speak. I hope he hears it.
