I love short track racing (Taylor's Version)
As many of you know, I work in the media for a living. And when you're in the media, you don't often get to sit back and appreciate the truly historic moments you are covering and, literally, living.
Anyways, a YouTube ad directed me to this video tonight - the State of Maryland's official video of MD Gov. Martin O'Malley signing the Civil Marriage Protection Act of 2012 in to law.
I'm the guy front and center in the video, tweeting. At one point, I spent three seconds, exactly three seconds, to sit back and appreciate where I was and the history I was covering. But I never truly grasped the history I was living.
I've covered a lot of races, most of which I've forgotten. I've even been to The White House. But if I had to write an autobiography tomorrow, this is the biggest event I've ever been a part of. I grew up a product of the 9/11 Generation. I remember Princess Diana's death. I lived in Florida during the 2000 disaster. I remember 9/11, Iraq, Afghanistan, the devastating tornado (La Plata 2002) and so much more. I collect the newspapers to remember the history I have lived through. But when you actually cover it for a living, it doesn't dawn on you for a long time.
Also -- this was the very first event I was ever actually assigned to as a photographer and the very first time I used my DSLR camera at a public event. A truly historic day, and I'm truly grateful to not just live history but to be apart of the media elite that makes sure the public is informed.
