Living in NC, VA or close!

Okay picking up on Kat's thread about anyone near Charlotte. My wife and I would love to move out of CA and if thinking about that big a step, we are considering NC, VA, maybe SC or Florida. Our problem is what is work like in that area? I'm a commercial electrician with a fair amount of experience in the field. Any good, large commercial construction projects going on? I'm not really thrilled with IBEW (electrician's union) so non-union work is preferred. And what about housing? Reasonable rent? Just throwing it out for now.:)

DE, we are close to both in TN. We are 20 minutes from the NC line, and about an hour from VA. NO STATE INCOME tax here. I lived in NC for 6 years. (Charlotte) There is alot of construction there my brother in law is an electrician there and makes a killing for a salary. As far as Union I don't think there is one. At least I know my brother in law is not made to be in it. The cost of living is a little high in NC at least that area. Probably, not as bad as CA though.

Hubby has a Aunt and Uncle who live in VA and I know houses go for a lot of money up that way. They do run a business and say that it's going great! Also have a Uncle in NC and they love it! Don't really know about jobs but could get some info!

TN wouldn't be bad.......but, do I have to vote for Gore?:)

UMMMMM, that would be a definite HELL NO!!!! We disowned him a long time ago. He didn't even carry TN in the election. :2gunsfiri

I'm a couple hours away from California Speedway and it's only 75 miles away!!:) I lived in Arkansas for almost 25 years.......know OK pretty well.:) Nice state, but if I moved to OK it would be near the Tulsa area............"Green Country".

my wife and i made a trip to Amelia Island which is north of Jacksonville. but not in Georgia........VERY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! should consider.................

arkansas, i dont know how you took it for so long--oklahoma is alright i guess, but if you have never been else where, than i'd say your sheltered, and Tulsa is pretty brown these days, so if your racist I wouldnt recommend it unless yout talking about the outskirt of tulsa (the boonies)

Zoe...De is not sheltered..................he didn't live his whole life in arkansas as you imply, he lived in california most of his life and then went to arkansas and lived..........and HE IS NOT A RACIST..where did that come from?

i wasnt implyin he was sheltered i said if u lived in oklahoma all ur life you would be sheltered, jeez reread my post you will see, and another thing i wasnt implying he was racist, i was implying to all people on this forum not to move there is they didnt like black people----believe me or not there are atleast one racist person on this board.

well he made no reference to living in oklahoma..re-read the post and stop being so snooty.....not becoming..

if u only knew me, i am so not snooty, lady i used to be poor white trash so i have absolutlely nuthin to think of my self as better than any one (thats my definition of snooty) he made a reference to knowing oklahoma, not living there.

ok..Zoe...whatever you say..I am not gonna go back and forth with a 17 year old............have a nice day!!:)

hey, if you're not thrilled with the union, you can get work. you will be severely underpaid, but you could probably work as many hours as you want to make up for the ... or until you die of exhaustion. my point is is that there is work if you are a worker. be it union shop or non. good luck. wish you the best.

P.S. by the way, when you go swimming, do you jump in or put a toe in to test the water a couple times?:p

Atlanta is a GREAT place to live, reasonable rent, lots of construction, and if you want to buy, the townhome community where hubby & I live is VERY reasonable.

Easy commute to many racetracks too.

HOT summers, humidity low in comparison to living near a coastline, mild winters but you can always go to the mountains. Snows very rarely, but we are in the middle of a 4+ year drought.
My dafodils bloomed in early Feb this year and spring and autumn are perfect.

My community is not like most, only 50 condos and NOT like apartments. Totally wooded too with deciduous and pine trees.

well thats good...........don't want to live anywhere near snow........don't like the stuff..................I am a native florida girl............like the sunshine, but not the humidity...lived thur enough of that stuff.........but guess I could take it in my old age..hahahaha...
maybe I will do a search...........see how much rental houses are..work etc..................thanks Kat.......

Hotlanta isn't too bad, but the traffic because of the construction is a pain. I'm from Greenville, SC which is 2 hrs from atlanta and charlotte. Might want to check it out. Last I heard, there's TONS of jobs there. I went back last summer for the first time in about 4 yrs and hardly recognized it. It's grown so much. They've got tons and tons of plants like BMW, Michelin, etc.... and you'll rarely come across any union jobs. Southerners have never been too keen on the union.

hey im from Charlotte....there is a ton of work here for you.....Charlotte is the 2nd fastest growing city in the USA...has been for about 10 years now...so im sure you could find some damn good work here.

Hi DEIfan

well thats good to know plenty of work...........now what about rentals? houses for rent, what do they run?
thanks........it would be great to live in charlotte.......
hubby would surely love that............:D

Come on now, cutiepie, you've GOT to move to the Charlotte area! Forget about all those other "New South" towns. North Carolina has got it all: mountains, racing, work, affordable housing, and barbecue. What else do you need?!!

Besides, what about all those dinner parties we're supposed to have? :D ;)

I live in virginia about 30 miles south of richmond, Im planning on moveing out to southern CA in about a year or two. Theres plenty of work here, depends what area you go in on what the houseing look likes. I recomend if you move to virginia you move to chesterfield county, I live in a small town.

dont forget about the beaches

i would say rent is about average

a one bedroom apartment would probably run you about 600 or so

The beaches in california are so much more beutiful then those in NC and Va Fron what I have seen anyway.

Good Lord! $$$$$$$$$
We have a 2 bedroom duplex, garage, mountain view for $375. Love that country livin'!!

shoot for my parents house is about 375 and you get can a slummy apartment for 100 bucks here even though i wouldnt recommend it---the **** roaches and fleas are bigger than your children!!! lol i havent lives in them jsut been there before

Rayna, I don't actually live in Atlanta, North of it, in a wooded community of townhomes, only 3 to a unit side by side, cedar and 2 story. 3 Bed, 2 1/2 bath, FP, charm, pool, tennis, not snooty, diverse community and my mortgage including taxes is only $725 a month. My job is only 1+ miles from home so NO BS highway.

Real country is Not that far away, lakes, mountains, mild winter, and I moved here from New England 8 years ago and will NEVER go back.

Why rent when you could buy? I know, that damn down payment hurts but I just bought my 1st home (here) 1 year ago and will never rent again if I can help it.

Hubby knows some contractors too. Besides, I need some electricical work done and would be happy to pay hubby.

PURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

What part of Charlotte are you finding a 1 bedroom for $600 a month? I used to live in Charlotte and the average 1 year ago was $750.

wow...we would be rich with that kind of rent.............

cost of living in southern california is outrageous...........

Yea it is But I go down there on vacation every year and I just love it. I have a friend who lives down there, he found a place for 110,000$ me and him want to get .I hate it here in this small town in virginia, gotta drive 30 miles to go watch a movie at the theaters. Cannot get cable or dsl, they dont offer it here, when I went to canada I saw a house on the coast for 100,000$ which is like 75,000$ our currency. It looked like a house that would cost 400,000$ over here though and it was over looking the coast.

Yeah some of the beaches are pretty out here........but they get closed a lot because of pollution. 1/4 inch rain floods in Los Angeles and all that run off goes to the beach. Styrofoam cups, cigarette butts, hypo needles, you name it!!:(

Hey DEIFAN, even when my late mom passed 2 years ago at age 80 with no Gvt help she lived OUTSIDE of Charlotte in Cornelius, & she was paying over $800 a month for a 1 bath 2 bed (if one could call it that). The BR #2 was about the size of my walkin closet in GA at my last apt and couldn't hold a single bed AND dresser, let alone be a computer room. Her LR/DR/Kit was about the size of MY den.

Hey, Kat -- Stop trying to steal my new neighbors away from me! I won't know a soul in NC if CP & DEW don't move there!!!

Just kidding, of course. I still won't know a soul, but I was just joking.

I told you Lisa, stay here for a bit while exploring options.
We all can have a dinner party as long as you cook, 36' deck, grills of choice, I'll buy the food, alchohol, soda, juice and make some sweet tea and of course Cutie and DE are more than welcome. Pool is just a short walk away and no rugrats just nice yununs. :)AND single male homeowners who I would match with my daughter.:loveya:
