The final stage of the Rally Deutschland was certainly a nail-biter. For a while, it looked like Marcus Gronholm might just snatch a last-minute victory from under Sebastien Loeb’s nose.
Marcus had a 13-second gap to make up to Seb if he wanted to win; at the half-way point he’d clawed back almost exactly six and a half seconds.
“I started that stage feeling quite relaxed, as I thought 13 seconds was quite a lot,” said Seb afterwards. “But then I learnt from the split times towards the end that Marcus had suddenly got 10 seconds on me! I tell you, the last few kilometres were quite exciting...”
