Absolute bull pucky. As Jeff Gordon pointed out Friday afternoon on his Twitter account.

“All I’m going to say about Gibbs cars oil pan is that we had 100-point penalty for a flared left front fender that never went on track,” Gordon wrote.

The reference was to the 2007 penalties Gordon’s and Jimmie Johnson’s teams drew for body infractions at Sonoma—penalties that included $100,000 fines and six-week suspensions to their respective crew chiefs, Steve Letarte and Chad Knaus.

The difference there is the Hendrick penalties were with the bodies and NASCAR said nothing to change with the bodies. Engines are a little different, teams can try things and so forth as long as they are approved. The oil pan issue was not illegal, just not approved. To me, there shouldn't have been much of a penalty at all. I think it lies more on NASCAR's shoulders than it does JGR's.

Darby already said it wasn't going to involve points.
Jimmie gets parts confiscated and doesn't get fined or points deductions.
Another example of NASCAR's inconsistency.

Which NASCRAP official made that determination ????....Sooooo...You think some team is going to submit a new 30# oil pan for approval, and it's going to be allowed.........................

Agreed...Nascar was very adamant when the COT came out, they said you mess with the body and there will be huge penalties. I honestly thought the $50k was a little steep, but oh well. Gotta side with Nascar on this one.

Just for the record....JTG/Dauraty and Germain Racing did the exact same thing at last years Mi race.....They each got $75k in fines and 50 Driver/Owner points....Just sayin..........

Yep, and in this case, one of the cars involved had a problem last race as well. NASCAR's always come down hard on teams that have had multiple infractions in a year. That was one of NASCAR's excuses for coming down so hard on Bowyer, that is was back-to-back weeks where they had infractions.

Starting to look like the Gibbs boys are held to a different standard. This isn't like last week either, a heavy oil pan to weigh the car down and give it more downforce, that's pretty blatant.

Guess we know where that golden horseshoe is.question is who's ass is it up at JGR???????

I don't see why any points would have to be docked from these teams. From the Sporting News:

One important note: There are no weight restrictions on oil pans in the NASCAR rulebook, but NASCAR reserves the right to reject parts it finds questionable.

That's news to me. So now we'll have weight limits on oil pans now. Too bad NASCAR overlooked it as being a potential advantage, and too bad the JGR boys didn't.

These inconsistances are what make people question the integrity of the sport. You cant say someone over here doing the same thing as someone over there deserves a harsher or weaker penality.

I think it's more of a case of NASCAR squashing innovation in the name of parity that's turning people (like me) off.

Absolutely 100% true. I no longer have the enthusiasm I once did. The chickenchitness is now readily apparent at the local tracks too.

They're in a tough spot since it's in their best interest to put on a good show for the fans and the most visible competition is on the track between the drivers, but I'm sure I speak for other gearheads when I say that that's only half the battle and it's every bit as interesting to watch the competition in the garage and on pit lane. I say give 'em the tools to compete and reward the best engineers.
