Montana developer funds bounty for Maryland sniper
Associated Press
HELENA (AP) - A Montana developer launched a nationwide effort Tuesday to raise at least $1 million as a reward for information leading to the capture of the sniper responsible for fatally shooting six adults and wounding a teenager in the Washington, D.C. area.
Tim Blixseth gave $50,000 to match the reward money raised by Montgomery County, Md., where five of the fatal shootings took place last week.
In a letter to Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan, Blixseth challenged other citizens to donate whatever they can to a reward fund. Once the amount reaches $1 million, any additional money should be given to the victims' families, he said.
"I believe that if the ante gets high enough, someone will come forward to expose those responsible," Blixseth wrote. "The random, senseless killing of innocent citizens has to be stopped."
In a phone interview Tuesday, Blixseth said Monday's shooting of the 13-year-old boy in Bowie, Md., sparked his decision to get involved.
"That was enough," he said. "This guy clearly crossed the line. He raised the stakes a lot higher. He basically said everything's open game."
Blixseth said he believes if more money is raised for a reward, someone with information is more likely to step forward.
"The quicker we can get the reward to a bigger amount, the sooner we can save someone's life," he said.
Blixseth said he sent 100 e-mails to business leaders across the country, encouraging them to contribute.
"If we as an American population and people stand up every time something like this happens and say, 'No, we're going to find you and punish you,' maybe someone will think twice about doing it next time," he said.
Should police find those responsible for the shootings before an informant steps forward, all of the reward money should go to families of the victims, he said.
Blixseth divides his time between Rancho Mirage, Calif., and the Big Sky area in southwestern Montana where he is developing a 21-square-mile resort called Yellowstone Mountain Club that includes ski runs, a golf course and luxury housing.
