So I'm in the market for a truck, new or used. Now this truck is going to be a personal vehicle and since I'm now working from home, it won't really be a daily driver per-se. I already have a 2004 PT Cruiser that I use for my job, so that's getting relegated to "work vehicle."

Now I do want to be able to drive the truck as a daily driver when needed, but I also want a truck that's also fun to drive. Sometimes I'll feel like going camping, or taking it to a NASCAR race and tailgating. Hel, I love watching trains and wouldn't mind taking along a truck that can get through the narrow mountain roads so that I can find that good spot to watch trains snake their way through the Appalachia mountains.

So far my requirement is, 2008 or newer, 4x4, and crew cab in case I want to take some friends on a road trip.

Thoughts?

Is the TRD Taco worth the kind of high price tag?

I don't think so.. But they hold their value stupidly well. Get a used (96-whenever) Taco and don't lose a dime when you decide to sell. I love the TRD Tacoma. One day........

I work with a guy that bought a new one in '04....... gave 21,000 dollars for it. Wrecked it in an ice storm last winter. Totalled. 300,000 miles and never had a problem except headlight bulbs..... He figured he'd be lucky to get 5 grand with the miles it had on it. They wrote him a check for 15,900 dollars!!!!!!! He thought they made a gigantic mistake and called them back to double check. I had never seen a regular vehicle hold it's resale value like they do.

Exactly.

I guess your not interested in my 1994 chevy Cheyenne 4x4 with 125,000 KM on it. Certified last year.

Nope sorry. :p Part of the "fun" is to be able to hook up my MP3 player to an Aux cord and rock out.

Also, it's a Chevy, and since Chevy is owned by GM, and since GM had a massive barrage of recalls in 2014, I just don't trust GM vehicles.

But those crap boxes are 20 years newer. :)

Every manufacturer is flooded with recalls these days.

+1 on a Taco. Have a friend that has a early 90's body style on 34" tires, rolled it on it's side 3 separate times and goes through mud holes and it still runs. His wife won't ride in it. The bed got trashed on the second roll so he has a flatbed on it now.

I'll be honest, if I get a Taco then I might as well get a brand new Taco. I mean if they hold their value better than other trucks, then why not? Taco with TRD Sports package, here I come. :D

That would be the only vehicle I would even consider buying new. The rest of 'em drop like a rock in value as soon as you drive 'em off the lot. I've always bought a 2 or 3 year old vehicle to let the new owner get his rocks off smelling the new car interior and pay dearly for it..... LOL........

I had a buddy who was a millionaire and he did the same thing. Mind you he wasn't buying Fords or GM. :)

Why is buying a car brand new seen as such a bad investment? I mean, I plan to keep this truck until it falls apart like the Blues mobile did at the end of The Blues Brother. So what do I care about deprecation?

The only point I was making was that if your trading every 3 years, your better off starting with a 3 year old.
If it is a 1 time thing, then your right who cares? That 1994 truck I bought belonged to one man since 1995. He bought it used but it really wasn't, it had about 6000 miles on it. Then he bought a new 5th wheel trailer and another brand new used truck.
All I did on the 94 was rivet in some cab corners and fix the tail pipe. It might need plugs and wires soon. :)

I said this is probably a wise investment.... only one I can think of as far as a new vehicle. Much better than paying 50 grand or more for a new Ford 4x4 crew cab diesel and in a few years it's worth 15 or less. Trucks are the most over priced vehicles on the market today. No reason for it.

If your plan is to keep it long term I'd buy new. I like to know the full history of the vehicle. Nobody treats her as good as you.

Do you need 4wd or do you want 4wd? I've had both over the years. Maintenance on a 4wd at one time was a major expense. Gas mileage for the most parts suks with 4wd. I did ok plowing snow with a 2wd. Present truck is 2wd and I have no plans to go 4wd in the future.YMMV

I'll admit, I want 4WD, there was a point in my life when it was needed, but since then I've started a business from home, so it's not needed as much anymore. Still, 4WD is nice to have when it rains at the race track and the parking lot has turned into one giant mud hole. :D

Interesting story about that, my dad, brother and I went to the Daytona 500 in 2014 and that was the one that got rained out. We decided to not wait out the storm because we had work the next morning. Anyways, we made it back to my dad's truck which is a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500, and it's a great truck, but it's 2WD and the parking lot was just one giant mud pile. It was very hard getting out of that because the truck didn't have much traction.

It's a long story about how I ended up buying a new '05 Silverado when all I really wanted was a utility trailer. As we progress up the ladder my wife asked if I was going to go 4wd and start doing a little plowing again. My answer was a resounding HELLL NO.

In your case it doesn't sound like you'll need it all the time but remember you will be paying the price all the time at the gas pump. I'm enjoying the low prices now but doubt they will last.
