Lost Great Drivers

Watching Tim and Dale race was one of the greatest pleasures of my life.
Tim was the only driver I've ever seen that could out-Earnhardt, Earnhardt.

Dale took things to the edge --- Tim took it to the edge and put 2 tires over it.

I too was lucky enough to see him race against Earnhardt but let's be realistic. Earnhardt was still schooling Richmond. It wasn't the other way around.

Oh, very true --- and I didn't mean it in that way. What I was trying to say was Tim took things to the extreme --- IMO he was trying to learn how far he could go by going farther than Dale. :)

Great rivals, that's for sure. Both had great talent. I've just been waiting for the post that states how Earnhardt would not have had all of his championships had Tim continued to race. As great as Tim was, he never finished the season in front of Earnhardt. Earnhardt led him in every category that I can think of during their far to short rivalry. It is a shame though to not see what may have been.

People seem to think that because of his driving style , other drivers didn't like Earnhardt . There were some famous flare ups with Bodine , Wallace ,etc , but I didn't get the impression he was disliked by anyone . Can the comparison be made between he and Jeff Burton as unofficial Mayor of the garage area ? Or was there someone else who more filled that roll ?

IMO Burton never had the influence of Sr.

Sr could walk into Bill France's office and throw his feet on his desk and smoke a cigar while they were talking about something

IMO nobody else could or would do that.

I saw Richmond race as well - at the famed Riverside Raceway. Tim was at his best on a road course and as any Earnhardt fan knows, Dale didn't care much for, or do very well on, road courses. This is an area where Tim routinely kicked Dale's, lilly-white azz!

True enough Tim did have four wins to Dale's zero wins in their head to head matchups @ Riverside but overall Dale had the best average finish between these two competitors that faced off fourteen times at this track. Dale had an average finish of 9.8 @ Riverside to Tim's 12.5. Not bad @ all for a lilly-white azz!

how different nascar would have been if tim, alan, davey and adam could have had full career's racing with earnhardt, gordon and stewart we'll never know. sure would have been fun to watch though. :)

This is one of the saddest threads I have ever read. Tim Richmond had a lot of promise. Davey Allison was a star and would have shined bright had he lived.

I miss Dale and Ernie, two of my favorites.

True about Tim. He was always balls to the wall! And who can say where Davey would have ended up on the Greatest of All Time list.

Dale is long gone bur Ernie Irvan is still alive and kicking, raising horses in SC!
