Where did they all go? Is it the product? Was it the move from network to cable only?

In my case it was the NFL. My DVR was set to watch the Steelers and record the race. I know that when I watch the NFL games I don't have to worry about getting race updates. The same is not the case if I were to watch the race instead.

Depending on what rating model they're using, the ratings record DVR data as well. That means fewer people watching and recording the races.

In my case, it was catching up on sleep since I didn't get home from the local track 'til 2 am.

I watched football then tuned in to watch the last 20 laps.

People like Mike, me and the rest of the sport fan world. Sorry, football is always going to out do a race if they are on the same time. I don't know many, if any, NASCAR fans that aren't bigger football fans.

Yep. That's why I think NASCAR should end the season Labor Day in Atlanta. There's no sense in competing with the NFL. Every gimmick they're coming up with to compete with the NFL is driving fans away (The Chase).

Especially considering most mainstream Americans still don't think NASCAR is a sport. If I had a dime for everytime I heard that...

Wasn't able to watch the race on TV,as I was trying to stay awake in the Grandstand!
Twilight Zone racing. The last laps are all I needed to see.
Saturdays Mods and the American Canadian Tour were better than the Big Race.
I did get to kiss the Granite Stripe on Friday though, before Kryle messed it up on Saturday Victory Donuts.

Great idea, Andy, February through Labour Day. That seems like about a 22-race schedule, give or take, or about one race at each track. I wish that I'd have thought of those parameters.

The problem is that it makes too much sense, so it'll never happen.

From the way Brian's treating NA__AR, I'm not so sure that even he thinks it's a sport, but rather just another entertainment venue.

Same here watched the football games on one tv race on the other big screen, but was paying attention to football the most.

I'd be bored and pissed off if I had no racing after labor day its to long between November and Feburary as it is I can't wait for 4 months to go by

OK, so now I know one person that does. Anybody else?

NASCAR, or any other sport for that matter, can compete with football. None. The only time I'll watch an entire race is if there is not a good football or hockey game on. Andy has a good idea but I'm not ready to stop watching races after labor day, just not while the other is on.

Saturday Night races, but many of the tracks in the Chase don't have lights (Loudon, Dover, Kansas, Martinsville, Talladega, any others?). Even then, NASCAR can't compete with College Football.

I'd like a shorter season too...... but I think the problem is not so much that it make sense, it's that the track owners that have multiple races will see decreased revenue. IMO they think about their pockets more than the product.

I'm just trying to help those tracks out a little. :D

Sorry Chrome, but you can add me to the list with kk. I've been a race fan longer than I even knew about football. But don't get me wrong, I still love football. If given a choice to see a NASCAR race or an NFL game, I'll take the race. I've been to plenty of both and I find racing much more exciting in person. BTW, while I will agree with you that the NFL and CFB is more popular than racing, there are still loads of fans who prefer it the other way. I've seen plenty of NFL fans looking down their noses at NASCAR, but it now seems that some quasi NASCAR fans are looking down their noses at us. Shocking!

VCR's and DVD recorders are Na$car's enemy. At one point in time my Sunday afternoons were devoted to watching the race.

Then I started recording them and found a whole new world out there. DVD made it even easier to record.

If I happen to forget they always run a replay later in the week.

DVR's are great! It was mentioned an an earlier post that somehow they are counted. I'm not quite sure how that works but if they are counted, I'm still adding to the total viewers. While I certainly skip past those commercials, I still watch the entire race. During most of the season, I watch each race live and listen to the scanner online. Once the NFL kicks in, that's what I'm watching live. It's easy to avoid NASCAR updates on TV. It's not easy to avoid NFL updates.

I get your point but we are in the minority believe it or not. I'd rather be at a race than a football game, unless it's the Saints, any day of the week. At home though, I flip back and forth but watch more of the football game until about 30 laps or so left.

I must be the odd man out here. I rarely watch football.

I am at the local short tracks almost weekly unless it conflicts with NASCAR. I DVR every race but I watch it live also. If I can't watch it, I listen to it on Sirius.

Football...is that the one with the bat?

Nah, give me racing any day. Especially, give me real local racing any day.

Totally agree on the local racing stuff, I've been to a lot of local races in the last 2 months, and it beats the Cup guys hands down every time!

my tv has this feature also. i'm surprised more people haven't discovered that it's not necessarily an either/or proposition. some people can multi-task. <g>

For the most part, I will watch the first 10 laps of a race, and the last 10 laps of a race. Most races at the Sprint Cup level are boring enough that you can skip the middle part and won't miss anything.
