A track worker at Dirt Track at Lowes Motor Speedway was critically injured Wednesday night.
40-year-old Chris James was driving one of several ‘packer cars’ preparing the dirt surface in preparation for the night’s events. James stopped his car on the track to check on the condition of another driver who had hit the wall. As he came around the back of his car, he was struck by another car, pinning James between the car and the fourth turn wall.
James was airlifted to Carolinas Medical center within 20 minutes of the accident.
According to his wife Lori James, her husband is ‘alert and upbeat’ despite surgery to remove the lower portions of both legs.
“I want to thank the EMT’s and medical staff at Lowes Motor Speedway for helping Chris,” she said.” The staff here at the hospital told us their actions helped save Chris’ s life and for that I’m very grateful.”
