Lowe's Repaving Finished
Contractors have finished repaving the racing surface of the 1.5-mile oval at Lowe's Motor Speedway and Jeff Black, the Speedway Motorsports, Inc., paving engineer overseeing the project, says the result is "the best of any track we've ever done." Sunmount Corp., of Roanoke, Texas, completed work on the racing surface Monday night and Goodyear is scheduled to conduct a tire test March 28-29.

"Everything is right on schedule," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of Lowe's Motor Speedway. "The weather has been very cooperative and the paving is finished between the inside white line and the outside wall."

With paving crews now working on the aprons and pit road, workers have begun re-installing the SAFER barriers which were removed when the $3.5-million project started in early January.

The repaving of the racing surface required in excess of 10,000 tons (20 million pounds) of asphalt which included a special polymer that increases the material's softening point. The new surface was applied in two layers, a two-inch "binder" went down first followed by a 1.5-inch "finish" layer.

An additional 4,000 to 6,000 tons of asphalt will be used to repave the aprons and pit road.

This marks the third time the entire 1.5-mile oval has been repaved since Lowe's Motor Speedway opened in 1960. The first new layer of asphalt was applied in 1973 and the entire track was paved again prior to the 1994 season. In between, the track's corners received fresh coats of asphalt in 1979 and 1987.

Nearly 100 NASCAR teams are expected to participate in six days of testing on the new surface during early May. NEXTEL Cup cars will be on track May 1-3 with Busch Series teams slated to test May 8-10.

Cue Humpy;

"I'm worried we'll see speeds in excess of 250 mph. We may have to have restrictor plates here too in '07. I'm really worried about safety."

"Thank you Hall of Fame!"

We have to "wait" and see how the cars do in testing. Humpy is good at promoting.

No he's not, anyone with minor knowledge of the track or Humpy knows his crap is as transparent as it gets.

wow...thats an idiotic statement...Humpy is the reason why Charlotte (sorry i still find it very hard to say Lowes) is what it is today.....he's the best track promotor in Nascar and possibly of all time.

Humpy knows what he's doing...he screwed up one time (last year with the track) and you guys are saying he's horrible? he's had a great career in Charlotte Motor Speedway. He's Bruton Smith's right hand man at SMI and has helped Bruton make SMI what it is today.

No, what's idiotic are his statements about "worrying" he may need restrictor plates and the part-time fans believing it.

Charlotte is 'Charlotte' because that's where the drivers call home. Lowe's is just another quad-oval 1.5 mile track. The difference isn't Humpy. Is Humpy really bad - no. Is his hype borderline 'Don-King-esque' - yes.

Gotta disagree with kyle. Over the years Humpy has been one of the best if not the best track promoter.

Sorry but your way off base...Charlotte was the first fan friendly track...Charlotte is a special place because of what Bruton and Humpy have done to it and because of the history of the sport in the area....i wont disagree with you that its special becasue a lot of the race teams are right beside the track...but Humpy has made Charlotte the track it is today.

Come on Humpy speeds of 250 on a 1.5 track??!! No way they didn't even go that fast when Bill set the record at Dega of avg.212mph. Humpy likes to generate interest and that is what he is good at a lot of hype.
